Two unconventional signs of severe incoming weather:

1. A waffle house being closed

2. Ted Cruz hopping on a plane to take a vacation
Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) was spotted earlier today, January 20, 2026, on a plane heading to Laguna Beach as the state of Texas braces for a rare ice threat and arctic cold front.

I think Schumer should say things he thinks will help elect Democratic senators in North Carolina, Maine, Iowa, Texas, Alaska, and Ohio. Those things are unlikely to match 1:1 with the preferences of people who either always vote D or think Democrats are too far right.

What emerges from Todd Blanche's statements: the FBI excluded local Minnesota and Minneapolis authorities from an investigation that it never in fact ever conducted—because of orders from the top that it not do so. No investigation of this homicide occurred.
BREAM: Is the FBI investigating the ICE agent who shot Renee Good?

BLANCHE: What happened has been reviewed by millions of Americans bc it was recorded. We investigate when it's appropriate. That is not the case here. We are not going to bow to pressure. So no, we are not investigating.

You may not believe that new-builds lower rents, but your landlord does.
I’m at a lunch for landlords (yknow, for research) and the speaker is predicting that rents in Portland will start heading up again in 2026 “as new supply remains constrained”

To the people who do this for a living, cause and effect couldn’t be clearer

I guarantee you have no idea where this short thread is going.
My husband was on the 2 train and a guy started braying about how Renee Good deserved to die and her "lesbian lover" did too. My husband got pissed and said, "You're absolutely disgusting." "Fuck you!" the guy said. "Fuck YOU!" my husband said. The guy left.

See? We just need to talk to each other.

I know this is getting lost in the noise, and the extent to which international news has largely moved on from Ukraine. The situation in the country and especially the capital is dire. Many at immediate risk, especially elderly. And more strikes coming to try and kill the civilian power grid totally
President Volodymyr Zelensky has declared a state of emergency in the energy sector, with particular attention on Kyiv, which is reeling from Russian attacks that have left residents without power, heating, or water in subzero temperatures.
Zelensky declares state of emergency in Ukraine’s energy sector as crisis worsens
"The consequences of Russian strikes and worsening weather conditions are severe," Zelensky wrote.

we did it! a perfectly structured democracy. it's got checks, it's got balances. this thing is made to last. there's only one weakness: bad guys. if somehow some bad guys who don't care about decorum got elected they could basically just tip the whole thing over. luckily such men are unelectable

It is remarkable how much aerosol emissions (likely largely from burning coal and dirty oil) provided a short-term counterbalance to other GHG emissions. Really makes you think about our options moving forward, given we could replicate this effect for relatively little cost
Just came across this! Its worth noting that CO2 along is a bit of an incomplete picture, as falling halocarbon emissions are counterbalancing rising CO2 emissions in terms of their contribution to the rate of warming. All GHGs give you ~0.2C per decade, with aerosols explaining much of the rest:

Compare with a parliamentary form of government in which prime ministers are often cast out by their own parties when things go awry and in some ways are more responsive to shifts in public opinion.
My least muddled take is that presidential impeachment doesn't work. Too many people incorrectly see the president as a king-like figure with a four-year democratic mandate.

That idea mutated in 2021-2024, when MAGA and SCOTUS decided that you can't ever prosecute a president for crimes.
What's with all the qualifications? Would it not be seen as a coup if the replacement was a criminal? Or from a different party? Or elected on a different ticket?

Seems like your thinking on this subject is quite muddled.
