Clay letters from ancient Mesopotamia are alive with idiom, sayings, and everyday language that I love.

Here are just a few random ones so you can enjoy them too.

ever find yourself looking in a history book and thinking "lol, those fucking idiots"?

ron perlman voice: humanity never changes
Just so I'm clear on this, computer memory has tripled in price because a bunch of it that hasn't been produced yet has been ordered to populate GPUs that aren't installed in data centers that aren't built yet in order to service a demand that doesn't exist to make profits that don't happen.

I have this tabletop RPG about play superheroes that lays out what being superhumanly intelligent means, and one of the earliest levels is "if you are dropped into a third world country, you will within a few months be solidly middle class via application of your intelligence"
Michael C. Rockefeller got shipwrecked in 1963, washed up on an island, and was promptly eaten by cannibals.

Rent is almost paid but I'm out of anxiety meds. Can anyone throw me like $40 to pick up a fresh prescription?
Hey. It's an emergency again. I need $650 for rent by Friday but I'm only making $400 at work this week. If you or anyone you know can help me keep my house, that would be appreciated. Cat pics pro gratis as always.

An easy way to explain luddites:

Textile manufacturers brought in machines that could do in an hour what would have taken 12 hours by hand.

And then, tried to keep paying the now 12x more productive workers the same wages as before.

That's it, that was the problem luddites had. Not complex.

Where this breaks for me is “can I intuit something useful about the setting from the new terms?” A calendar with Wet, Dry, and Storms does that, while D&D’s Mystaran calendar is just the normal one with an extra step where you look up to confirm that “Nuwmont” is January.
Not sure how I feel when a book tells me that instead of "12 months" they have "10 arcs," which are each 40 days long, and they all have names like Blossomarc, Flamearc Snowarc,.... I appreciate the world building, but couldnt we have just kept the calendar the same?

almost every novelist you read who's not from the airport fiction or bestseller sections is working a full on day job, including multi-award winners and absolute legends, or they have a spouse or trust that supports them. virtually across the board. just normalize in your mind that's how it works.
I know we know this, but authors need to get better at talking about how they actually make their money. Stop pretending it's from the books.
