As a lifelong Democrat who's been impressed by your overall performance in the Senate, I can't help but be disappointed by your 'yea' vote on this motion to advance the first federal ban on trans athletes that also creates a federal definition of sex that would make transgender and intersex people non-existent. I do not understand why you would want your name attached to anything that tries to legislate them out of existence. There is no quote unquote problem with trans athletes competing in collegiate or professional sports. The most authoritative estimate on the actual number comes from the NCAA's president, Charlie Baker, who stated that of the half-million or so college athletes in America, fewer than 10 were transgender. That's .002% of them. That's the very definition of an edge case. Additionally: trans people exist. That's just a fact. They've been composers, scientists, directors, poiticians and even Navy SEALs. It's anti-science and inhuman to try to create legislation that says otherwise. In a country where gun violence is rampant, the economy is in free-fall, and corporations are trying to strip away our rights, this legislation is a poor use of your time and resources. When is it ever mentioned besides by politicians and talking heads on the right? Do your constituents really let you know that it's a key issue for them, or do they want to be safe and secure in an actual democracy? You've signed on to a piece of hateful legislation for a cheap pop from people who aren't going to ever vote for you anyway. I'm ashamed that you're representing a state that has always prided itself on being a place for the different and less-represented. If you get primaried by a more progressive candidate, they will have my vote and my financial support.
