my favorite thing besides the wild concepts is getting to the end of the description and finding out what they're the mascot for
mondomascots.bsky.social
Kani Bucho, an office boss with an entire crab for a head, is the mascot for Yokobiki, a company that makes metal roller shutters for store windows.

Holy crap the @pemalevy.bsky.social interview is not to be missed. An eye-opening look at the Nazi-esque dual-state that SCOTUS is enabling

"well what are the Democrats supposed to do" I don't know! They're supposed to know! I'm not the one who sought and obtained a political position that would require me to know what to do when the ruling party attempts to install the President as a dictator!

nothing is scarier than an angry bloke you loved and are trapped with

a super hard trick to pull off and the director crushed it

for me, bc i have basically 0 visual imagination, horror books aren't very scary, but horror movies are *terrifying* and i had to slowly work up to watching them
swordsjew.bsky.social
they're different, but doctor sleep the movie is very much a love letter to the shining while also being its own thing

anyway Jack Nicholson does an incredibly good job in this version of the story, which, irrespective of supernatural elements, is basically the story of the terror and isolation of domestic abuse
swordsjew.bsky.social
I think the scene where he says "I would sell my soul to get a drink" and then more or less does sets it up pretty effectively
swordsjew.bsky.social
it's overly sentimental, and also the final conflict is.... ridiculous to say the least
swordsjew.bsky.social
the movie trims most of the treacly guff out
swordsjew.bsky.social
the book Doctor Sleep is total dogshit but the movie is great, Rebecca Ferguson eats her part like a prix fixe tasting menu and she plays an eldritch horror who looks incredible in a top hat

the miniseries is dog shit-- you might as well just read the book. the kubrick version is good as hell but undeniably scary
swordsjew.bsky.social
they were *traumatized*
swordsjew.bsky.social
he really got hard done by in the movie
swordsjew.bsky.social
ive only seen the extended
swordsjew.bsky.social
right - i think it was also an active addict imagining the pure horror of sobriety
swordsjew.bsky.social
have you watched doctor sleep? it's both a great sequel and a love letter to kubrick, and squares the book/movie differences brilliantly
swordsjew.bsky.social
movie!Jack has a shorter arc (from contemptuous asshole to murderous asshole) but Nicholson is so damn good

and Duvall is deeply underrated, people mock her but she plays the hell out of a basically decent person who believed in and loved her husband, and was betrayed
swordsjew.bsky.social
stephen king did a very unfortunate miniseries as a rebuke to kubrick and it just... does not translate to film

we're doing a double feature with the criminally underrated sequel, Doctor Sleep (which is so much better than that book it's not worth comparing)
swordsjew.bsky.social
im rewatching The Shining for the millionth time and while i think the book does some things better (getting us into Jack's head) the book is a story about a good man swallowed by ghosts and Kubrick's story is about a family annihilator, and thus much, much scarier

UNTIL IT’S DONE, Ep. 4: Sylvia Rivera

In the 1970s, queer New Yorkers had been pushed to the margins of NYC. Our trans neighbors faced immense cruelty. But in Sylvia Rivera, they found a champion.

As we combat Trump’s politics of darkness, her legacy can light the path forward.
