Literally every time I got to talk to mainland Chinese scholars while studying in Taiwan they were all incredibly freaked out by the population trap and middle income traps.
i went for a talk in china in grad school with a prominent party member and very senior person in the commerce ministry (who was a college friend of my professor) and the whole presentation was basically him going on about this and trying to avoid the middle income trap
