It's interesting that this part of British society is something the Harry Potter series pokes fun at (the Dursleys are notoriously nosy and gossipy) and then the author of that series decided to make "Not Minding Her Own Business" her whole thing for the rest of her life.

This does seem to be a belief of a lot of reactionaries for centuries. Remember, a lot of modern conspiracy theories descend from the idea that the French Revolution was a Masonic/Illuminati/Jewish plot. Tsar Nicholas II believed every "real Russian" supported him unconditionally.

I haven't seen that, it's just the typical "We're so back"/"It's so over" cycle that is always on social media. And like Ross says, a lot of people feel in control if their cynicism is borne out. I have a friend who thinks midterms aren't going to happen and uses the word "hopeslop."
