I get that the news cycle is packed right now, but I just heard from a colleague at the Smithsonian that this is fully a GIANT SQUID BEING EATEN BY A SPERM WHALE and it’s possibly the first ever confirmed video according to a friend at NOAA

The strategic objection is that it just incentivizes anti-satellite weaponry which means we're advocating for other nations to whittle away one of our amazing comparative advantages.
President Donald Trump vowed that a “Golden Dome” missile-defense shield should be “fully operational” by the end of his term, saying it would be able to protect the US from threats including ballistic missiles, hypersonics and advanced cruise missiles.

The 5 pumps a day by the Admin are getting a bit tiresome.

If I were a Bloomberg editor like say @weisenthal.bsky.social, I would even consider a creative re-use of the phrase "pain at the pump."

At this juncture it’s important to remember Key Square’s returns were terrible and he was frequently on the receiving end of wrong way risk and picked the losing trade in a lot of complex situations.
None of this makes sense. He wants to cut spending to slow inflation (but not growth), still cut taxes but not increase the deficit…if the deficit is job #1 for Bessent you can’t do the things he is saying he will do and wind up with both growth and a lower deficit.
My latest column is about Treasury Secretary Bessent and the economic “detox” he keeps talking about:

Serious point: This might be the most interventionist American government in my lifetime. The price of just about every good reflects the good thinking of the Commissars in Washington DC implementing their 5-year plan for National Greatness, rather than market forces.

yeah, the 2014 leaked email was that Scott Alexander had specifically intended Slate Star Codex to promote neoreaction and race science

not a single person denied the email, they were just outraged at the leaker for breaking confidence, Yudkowsky even declared that they should be shunned, lol

The US government was able to orchestrate the invasion and subsequent dismantling of Panama’s government under Operation Just Cause in about 39 days at a time when our military technology was far less advanced.
The government has no real power to force El Salvador to return one of their own citizens to us. He was also not trying to escape the government but rather gangs. This whole thing is insane, and there is no clear path out of the problem without El Salvador's cooperation.

Sprawl for some, tiny American flags for others
sprawl is an unmitigated environmental, social, and economic disaster

it is no longer affordable (especially when you add in transportation and time)

sprawl is driving climate change. literally.

and it is a ponzi scheme - unable to fund maintenance and replacement costs
Not a single time in this article glorifying the need for sprawl to address the US's affordable housing crisis is there a mention of the vast transportation costs of sprawling living patterns. Nor is there mention of the fact that sprawl is directly linked to disinvestment in urban cores.
