Bringing this back for today. What an honour to have Tom Lehrer rock up to our little country, ask what civil rights issues were going on (the All Blacks' upcoming tour of Apartheid South Africa), and then immediately write a song about it.

Auckland Star 16 April 1960, page 1

Oh Mr Nash by Tom Lehrer

When the early missionaries first brought Rugby to New Zealand,
It became the state religion right away,
And to the ten commandments has been added an eleventh,
And it says: No matter what -- thou shalt play!

It's quite frustrating that loads of people who I generally agree with are shrugging at this saying other countries don't have juries and it's like, yes, they don't, but they do have other safeguards that we *don't* have (like, for example, allowing judges a lot more freedom to set token sentences)

Observe your striving. Is it born of wisdom, or clinging? Offer yourself—and all beings—a moment of ease from effort. Rest. It is a worthy practice.

One of the best things you can learn to say is "I don't know" or "I haven't tried it." Remain curious and open and make sure your opinions are *yours.*

That's really hard to do in a world designed to tell you how to feel about everything, but goddamn is it crucial to like... being a person.

I think it's become more neutral but this reads a bit like walking into an Australian outback pub and going "so, gents, you still all pooftahs in here or have some of you stopped mincing about".

You know what's going to happen, I have to assume you want what's going to happen, you can't complain.
Is this platform still massively against AI or has it moved more towards acceptance?

And it's that framework that will outlast any given scientific claim as we learn more about the world, so it's vital that students understand how science establishes and undoes its orthodoxies in practical ways, rather than being taught a fragile façade that will crumble once they leave school.

Science is, if done right, always changing, growing and self-correcting, but it does so in its context as a human endeavour to understand the world better. It can't be reduced to a list of atomic facts independent of history, it grows out of an evolving intellectual framework.

Gait analysis is bullshit. It’s not bullshit in the sense of a high rate of false positives. It’s bullshit in that it is vaporware.

The FBI has ruled the woman out as a suspect in the 2021 plot, sources said, but only after her name circulated on social platforms and a conservative news site.

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

The reality is, there are sometimes areas and communities that simply are not ripe for organizing, or at least organizing around liberatory values.

Sometimes they're just too hate pickled.

Sometimes they just haven't lost enough, yet.

Sometimes they've recently been burned by organizing.
