Last year, I wrote a book about teaching musical concepts through popular music in the K–20 classrooms. If that is your kind of thing, you can purchase it as a downloadable here through the fabulous publisher F-Flat Books.

Like many others, I have been rethinking negative feelings I’ve had about Chris Martin lately & I DON’T like that this picture makes him look responsible for this disaster.

I am on a steady stream of 21st century Thanksgiving episodes. Already mainlined 4 out of 5 New Girl Thanksgiving episodes while making mac & cheese.

Now we’re hitting the hard stuff: How I Met Your Mother and Gilmore Girls.

This is a huge reason I keep going to the Methodist church. This is the doctrine.
I don’t know who is ready to hear this but people don’t have to add value

Like people should also be allowed to exist for free

My annual realization that they could have cast Ewan McGregor as The Wizard in these Wicked movies & that would have made things much better.

I could triple this list with songs about dysfunctional families but it's a couple days before Black Friday and the consumerism's got me glum enough. wp.me/pzXeC-kI6
I’m sorry, mama: Songs about family dysfunction
Chewed without digested, family trauma and pop songwriting have been uneasy bedmates. The lack of resolution — the dreaded word “closure” — in our relationships and the rigo…

This is my fave verse to play for kids when discussing early hip-hop. Their faces!
The Wonder Mike verse of Rapper's Delight where he just suddenly starts going off about how much the food at his friend's house just completely fucking sucks is a Thanksgiving song.

I will be making my last minute run for green beans, Durkee French fried onions, gf mac, extra sharp cheddar, and gf rolls tomorrow. Wish me luck.

I make side dishes. My in-laws do the turkey, stuffing, potatoes, etc. I only last week made my first homemade mac & cheese.
Let’s run this again, was fun last year, what new adversities are we about to create for ourselves on the field, drop your menus below

I had a colleague once who mentioned offhand that he played jazz in clubs. I looked him up and found he had won a Grammy. When asked WTF he was still working as a computer consultant, he replied "Do you have any idea what jazz pays?"

almost every novelist you read who's not from the airport fiction or bestseller sections is working a full on day job, including multi-award winners and absolute legends, or they have a spouse or trust that supports them. virtually across the board. just normalize in your mind that's how it works.
I know we know this, but authors need to get better at talking about how they actually make their money. Stop pretending it's from the books.

I’ve been lucky by publishing standards: Over the last 8yrs made $11,000 from my 2 books. That’s $1,375 a year.

I work in a kitchen & I support 2 kids.

Most authors are working class people, same as you. Stealing from us don’t making you a working class hero. It makes you a scab.

Former FRL kid, child of single parent, now married to a partner who makes slightly more than I do, we both have professional & master’s degrees, and we are indeed stretched thin. But nowhere near poor.
It feels like everyone is deliberately conflating the poverty rate with the amount you need to earn to feel secure and comfortable. You might feel stretched if you make 132k in DC with two kids but you are objectively not poor.

Inexcusable.
Emmanuel, a 15-year-old with intellectual disabilities, wandered away from his mom’s fruit stand in October.

She reported him missing to Houston police. But instead of reuniting them, the city turned him over to ICE.

“They’re failing all of us,” his mom said.

Trying not to ragebait read as I start break, but phew, this is a doozy.

As a performing arts teacher, a union site rep, and a former gifted kid & generally undiagnosed person who has only started meds in her 40s, this article is a steaming pile of elephant turds.
I don't think I've ever disagreed and agreed more strongly with a piece, seesawing from one paragraph to the next.

Will come back to dissect.
