as soon as you become a political correspondent in America they take you into a little room in the White House and hit you on the head with a mallet until you lose the ability to retain long-term memories.
After Trump tells NBC News he could maybe use a "softer touch" on immigration, we immediately get the "different tone" narrative from CNN.

Brianna Keilar: "A change of tone for the president. Softer touch."

David Chalian: "He acknowledged learning something that this requires a softer touch."

i think this is exactly right. fascism is the Death Drive as ideology. it's why the catastrophic end of the Nazi Party does not deter people from worshipping Nazis. that the Nazis destroyed Germany along with the rest of Europe is part of the appeal.
disturbingly plausible

I think a lot about Parmy Olson's observation that AI companies actively push everyone to talk about existential risk, because it distracts from more prosaic current day concerns like copyright theft, conditions for data workers, energy & water use, and their financial situation

I think one of the wildly disorienting parts of this is that when you try to "look for the helpers," you end up looking at the guy they shot.

Really hard to look at this and all the other examples of bravery and kindness from ordinary people in this moment not think also of the tremendous cowardice exhibited over the past year by some of the richest, most well-protected people in business, media and politics
Let us all have the courage displayed by the residents of Minneapolis.

Monstrous acts and crimes are being committed right now, in our names, with our tax dollars:
-Renee Good - murdered by an armed agent of the state for protesting
-Alex Pretti - murdered by an armed agent of the state for protesting
-Liam Ramos (5) - used as bait to lure his father out of the house

Nonviolence is, in fact, working. This administration is weaker than it was a year ago. More and more of the public is becoming galvanized against it; its agents are being impeded.
Do you honestly think people in the civil rights movement and other nonviolent movements faced no violence themselves? They practiced nonviolence because it works, because the oppressor wants a shooting war, which is the war it will win
How's your non-violent working Mr Gandhi stancil? They will kill each and everyone of you right if they had the chance and you will still be writing Kumbaya.

the thing about satyagraha is that Gandhi being murdered himself doesn't constitute failure--the point of nonviolent resistance isn't that it's more safe, it's that it dramatizes the violence of the state and highlights its illegitimacy via contrast, and it mobilizes public outrage against injustice

Do you know how hard it is to get cops to seemingly side with people shot by a bunch of officers
Minneapolis Police Chief O'Hara: "The video speaks for itself. We have identified this person - 37-year-old, white male, resident of the city. The only interaction that we are aware of with law enforcement has been for traffic tickets and we believe he is a lawfully gun owner with a permit to carry"

I just spoke with the White House after another horrific shooting by federal agents this morning. Minnesota has had it. This is sickening.

The President must end this operation. Pull the thousands of violent, untrained officers out of Minnesota. Now.

There is one word in the English language that explains what Minneapolis is experiencing right now: tyranny.

We are under assault by a tyrannical government and its little jackbooted commandant. We are going to keep fighting, and we will win, stand with us.

this is by no means universal, but it's deeply irritating as a non-American to be made to feel like we have a responsibility to cater to Americans who think "but I didn't vote for Trump" is somehow a cheat code.

if you don't think it's your problem, then it sure as fuck ain't ours.
and yes, if you are an American who claims to be anti-Trump and pro-international solidarity, but whine about the prospect of being mildly inconvenienced: you're a child. grow up.

The goal here is to do whatever it takes to force the MAGAs to back down before we get to a point of "the USA launches an imperialist war against the European Union."

Achieving this may require temporarily inconveniencing us Americans.
