since I seem to occasionally post things that other people see I figure I should write a pinned post.

I'm a 40-something professional nerd who has Thoughts on things, some better than others. I live in Calgary, Alberta with my wife and two cats, but I'm originally from the UK.
speaking of risk assessments, it reminds me of the time I saw a guy longboarding down the street wearing an N95 but not a helmet.
If you spent all your time worrying about getting carjacked but meanwhile texting while driving every day, I’d say your risk assessment was leading you to make suboptimal choices. Same with activists who don’t want cameras on them when they’re confronting ICE thugs, for fear of being indicted later
YES. Drivers have spent too much time worrying about wearing seatbelts and checking their mirrors in an effort to avoid after-the-fact consequences. But those consequences are extremely unlikely

First, the UCP said there was an “election integrity crisis," which led to a voter ID law.

Then a “national unity crisis” → a sovereignty referendum.

Now a “crisis of confidence” in the courts → defunding judges.

There is no evidence of these crises.

The UCP is trying to manufacture them.

That Jeff Bezos's Amazon gave Brett Ratner, someone photographed with Jeffrey Epstein and in the Epstein Files, $75 million to make a doc about Melania Trump, while he chooses to destroy The Washington Post, says about all you need to know.

another article making some good points, although I gotta say I'm less enthusiastic about focusing on getting Facebook et al to unblock news articles.
Donald Trump probably (!) won't order a military attack on Canada. But his administration is happy to interfere in our politics, and we have to respond accordingly: by thickening our informational borders and holding tech companies to account. #cdnpoli

Trumpism's war on the truth is coming to Canada. We need to be ready
The Trump administration has made it clear that it will use almost everything at its disposal in its broader war on the truth. If we're not careful here in Canada, we'll become one of its casualties.

deeply unserious people.
Occupy was the first time "people from the internet" showed up in on-the-ground activism, and it so infamously sucked for existing activists that it basically destroyed the counter-globalization era movement.

This is a monumentally irresponsible move. Whoever advised the premier should resign or be fired.

Smith shouldn't just withdraw the threat. She should apologize for threatening to cut off Albertans' access to their own justice system.

Tomorrow.

amazing how many people on the "left" turn into petty authoritarians when given the chance.
After the Pretti shooting, one of those guys straight-up suckerpunched me for “filming faces”… as I filmed him and fully-masked friends lighting fires directly in front of the dozens of gathered press crews. Nonsensical; just dudes wanting someone to give them a reason. Not that different from ICE.

This was an argument for banning Will Stancil from the Minneapolis resistance movement.

I sort of let go of arguing that activists should try to do a good job and not a bad job because I got yelled at a lot, but I think brain rot around the plight of Palestinians is going to undo us.

Today’s news that separatists have been conspiring with U.S. officials to undermine Canada is deeply disturbing.

Smith emboldened separatists by cozying up to Trump, weakening our country at a fragile moment when we need to stand firmly against this.
