Incidentally prog rock bands like Yes figured out that you can pretty much string together random words that sound good together and people will still listen to your music. For them the vocals were just another instrument, rather than the conveyor of a message.
Musicians tend to be biased towards the idea that effort put into writing lyrics pays off, but most music is not consumed *actively*. You hear music on the radio while you are driving, at weddings, or as muzak in stores
