Irish 🇮🇪 but live in UK. Retired social worker, also magistrate. Wrote an Irish memoir, still trying to sort out stuff owing to original publisher going bankrupt. You know Angela’s Ashes: it’s ten time better
Actually the sum is 3 billion. It’s about 8 million per day, figures for 23/24. So mea culpa with🔔🔔on!! So may Monahan (Ms) now leave the doghouse and inform you how much I - as an immigrant, rely on so many others in my east London diverse community to keep me going into my octogenarian years.
Monahan's figure of 8 billion put's MONAHAN in one of those hotels and makes them one of those "arrivals".
i mean his figures can't be a lie.....could they🤨

So I may have bumped into him, but I suspect we didn’t overlap. I was there around 1949/50. Was he a president or a Taoiseach member? I should know but we lived in ignorance, leaving primary school at 14. Unless you had money to pay for secondary. Improved now. I was educated to degree level in uk.
No, he was a resident of the convalescent home. The Aras is the resident of the President of Ireland

Indeed. I was using the government figure for hotels etc. it’s almost 8 billion so they say. I think you’re assuming there’s no time lag between arriving and becoming a tax payer. But most arrivals are not skilled and unlikely to earn enough to become a tax payer for many years. In the meantime….
Pressures on public services are as a result of 14 years of austerity, Brexit and Covid. Adding an additional £28 billion to the existing deficit is not going to help fix any of the previous bad decisions and lack of investment. Quite the opposite.

Still not convinced that the country will run dry without thousands of penniless immigrants who have to be fed an housed at a cost of 8 billion pounds annually. Then go on to consume resources at a greater rate than indigenous folk. Esp. education, health and housing. Maybe a break is needed.

He’s a bit of an idiot. Most Immigrants are coming to a better place. They are driven by poverty and corruption. Not saying there’s none of both in the UK and Europe but there’s hope and possibility as well. No developed country with high immigration has ever been reduced to 3rd world status.
Stephen Miller should be set adrift on an ice floe.
Stephen Miller is now arguing that assimilation is fundamentally impossible and that certain cultures are not compatible with Western civilization

But surely immigrants bring pressures to start with: on health, education, housing etc. Who funds these services that they enjoy from the moment they arrive? They are totally dependent on the state. Could argue that in the long run they’ll become taxpayers hopefully fully independent but unlikely.
As net migration figures plummet, is now the time to point out that the Office for Budgetary Responsibility (OBR) estimate that the UK loses £7b in tax for every 100K drop in net migration.
UK net migration drops sharply to 204,000 in year to June - live updates

You’re right I suppose. Not something that ever caused me to lose any sleep. So many other things in life cause sleeplessness. So I’ve decided not to host to add to the stress of moving food and drink from container to container etc. so thanks for the warning.
is a big part of hosting just moving food and drink from container to container to container

Do you mean the actual convalescent home was de Valera’s residence? Crikey, as I recall it was a huge place with extensive grounds. Sorry I don’t know what the Aras is/was. My parents had no time for de Valera. He tried to take Ireland back to simple, almost primitive times after the civil war.
That’s right - Linden was Éamon de Valera’s final home - he and Sinéad moved in after they left the Aras.

Dr Frizzle. I thought you were going to withdraw the proposal on Bluesky. Haven’t you heard of the sever year itch? Seems you have avoided a nasty rash. Congratulations.
Seven years ago today, I live tweeted my proposal to my wife!

In honor of that, I’m going to repost the proposal so it’s here on Bluesky 🫶🏻

Hardly breathing after watching this display of pure human emotion. People overjoyed at reunion. Very moving.
Very angry at those who caused so much sadness.

I hate the fact that I can write a sentence like "A cabal of right-wing billionaires are making a concerted effort to absolutely control the information supply in the Anglophone countries." and I don't sound like a conspiracy theorist.

Hey Mac, please follow me I do not have a beard (just a few stray hairs on my chin which can easily be removed with tweezers) and you’re likely to beat me in the boobs front. So I’m sure I qualify.
I'm not saying I'm petty but if your beard is better than mine I’m not gonna follow you. The same goes for boobies.

I’m not saying I don’t like Karoline Leavitt, I’m saying she gives off the stench of an old gym sock dipped in raw egg left in the sun whenever she speaks

Well what a nice hobby to have , dipping eggs into old socks. It takes all sorts I suppose. Just a suggestion: you could try chess, or tennis maybe or learn to play an instrument. You’ll save a fortune on eggs and socks. I agree her voice is dreadful like metal trolleys on concrete.

Nice!
At night you speak to me in dreams. Often I cannot catch the words but they still reassure. Sometimes, on the edge of consciousness, meaning filters through:
"What's wrong with you?"
You always did know what to say.
