What the fuck *is* amendment 3937, does anyone know?
Sponsored by Susan Collins, and congress dot gov just says "In the nature of a substitute" in the Purpose section, no text available
I'm assuming this means it has to go back to the House, but like, what did Susan "Grave Concerns" Collins *do*?

I saw someone post that they’d rather the Democratic Party get destroyed than win the 2026 midterms and honestly that is wrecker shit

I believe I've said this already but using the military to summarily execute people in international waters is a blatant crime against humanity and the people responsible should be tried by the ICC
that one I found especially striking because dems are barely acknowledging that issue, and even on bluesky, the supposed deranged leftwing bubble, it is maybe a b-tier issue for people to post about, very much eclipsed by ice raids

i am not anti-AI but i think people need to be clear eyed about what it means when we spend orders of magnitude more capital on orders of magnitude more applications that are obviously anti-social if not explicitly evil compared to the pro-social, liberatory, FALGSC style pitches
i really really really really think we are delivering on terrible, society destroying, applications of AI at about 10x the rate of "economically useful, liberatory, activity for normies"

video generation in particular is a thing i don't think we were NEAR ready for as a society
i don't really care about the copyright/plagiarism angle, personally, but holy shit is it dangerous that video evidence isn't necessarily evidence of anything happening in reality anymore

i think it's very bad that "agentic disinformation network, agentic nation-state level black hat, agentic revenge porn at scale" all occurred and were funded before "AI PowerPoint slide deck creation that actually looks nice" got solved

Dunno if it's my old libertarian streak or just the fact that i've worked with FAA certification a tiny bit in my career, but the way some people talk like "we simply need to regulate more" makes me think that they don't know what regulatory capture looks like in practice
me in five years, probably: "look, 99.9% of the uptick in air travel disasters can be traced to ATC problems, so nobody will notice if easing up on FAA cert requirements affects safety of flight, and this would let smaller manufacturers compete with the motherfuckers who wrote those requirements"

just got a WSJ push saying it passed but congress.gov still doesn't show it smdh
also, the Senate vote we're all mad about was only for cloture
H.R.5371 itself hasn't passed the Senate yet
distinction without a difference, maybe, but it irks me when people are sloppy with wording about such clearly defined processes

And if we want anything really big, we need a comfortable majority that allows for defections
The 89th Congress (1964 election) started with 68 Senators and 295 House reps on the blue team. LBJ swinging his dick around helped, sure, but holy shit those numbers though.

The thing about winning is that if you wanna win the policies you want you have to actually win elections. We lost elections in 24. So now we don’t get to win policies. Lots of folks seem to struggle with that. Gotta elect majorities.

If we were really going to "run the government like a business," Costco is the actual model we'd want to follow.
Let's again stipulate that the government is not a business & the whole idea it should run like one is a dumb category error. But if anyone was actually serious about running the government like a business & eliminating waste, the model would be Costco & not a single person/firm from Silicon Valley.
Costco is a really popular subject for business-success case studies but I feel like business guys kinda lose interest when the upshot of the study is like "just operate with scrupulous integrity in all facets and levels of your business for four decades" and not some easy-to-fix gimmick

Yup. If you’re unwilling to vote, donate, help, or run for office, you absolutely would not be willing to do the *much worse* shit that would come after electoral politics.
I’m at the “vote, donate, help, run for office or shut the fuck up” stage of political activism on socials man.
Cause most of the “we gotta burn it down, we need a new system” folks won’t bust a grape.

Psychopaths do not follow the law.
Psychopaths do not keep promises or honor deals.
That is their nature.
They lie and cheat and break the law.
The smart thing to do would have been to prevent such a person from becoming president.
But america failed at that task.
So we live with the consequences.
