Orban made a cynical statement claiming Ukraine’s future is a division into three parts: a Russian zone, a western zone and a “buffer” in between, Magyar Nemzet said. He said current European security talks already imply recognition of a Russian zone, with the only question being its size and shape.

3/ By abandoning treaties, retreating from institutions, failing to deliver and stepping back from its traditional leadership role, Washington has weakened the existing international system, leaving Beijing and its partner states as a credible alternative.

Based on experience so far, the consequence will be that Trump will warn Putin that if he doesn't stop the war in two weeks, there will be consequences (& repeat ad inf).
❗️Trump: I have no message for Putin. He knows my position. He has to make a decision. I will either be satisfied or not. If not, there will be consequences.

Ever heard of the Kalmar Union ?

I wrote for @eurcorrespond.bsky.social how the internet joke became a semi-serious debate in the Nordics: revival of the 15th century kingdom that united all the Nordic countries. And what it says about the state of the nuclear non-proliferation regime.

It's as if Trump doesn't understand that his leverage over both Putin and Zelensky was mostly tied to the US spending a lot of money helping Ukraine.
Trump says that America spent money "foolishly" to support Ukraine and adds, "we're not spending money anymore"

Do people understand? The idea of Ukraine giving away land that russia fails to occupy would open the door to a brand new era for all of you.

One where lands are annexed by declarations & superpowers coerce smaller nations into submission.

All in the name of peace, saving lives, and love, ofc.

Why am I so unimpressed by these strikes? Israel and the US have failed to target significant elements of Iran's nuclear materials and production infrastructure. RISING LION and MIDNIGHT HAMMER are tactically brilliant, but may turn out to be strategic failures. 🧵 1/17

Putin:

"I have said many times that I consider the Russian and Ukrainian peoples to be one people. In this sense, all of Ukraine is ours."

The audience clapped and laughed.

Ukraine is very different from Russia. Putin made sure we know that and fight for that.

It's pretty irritating how many pundits would hear the ideas "I want to shove 100 live scorpions in your mouth" and "I want to shove 0 live scorpions in your mouth" and sagely declare: "The wisest course of action is to let someone shove 50 live scorpions in your mouth."

When analyzing Israel‘s campaign against the mullah regime in Iran, it is obvious that the operations go well beyond the neutralization of the nuclear program. The Israeli Air Force absolutely dominates the skies and probably already destroyed most of the Iranian nuclear program in the first 24h.

Russia does not produce such aircraft anymore.

This unprecedented attack will go down in history.

Musing: one side effect of constantly defending (eg an institution or a political party) against disinformation and bad faith criticism is that you can become habituated to ignoring all criticism (as bad faith), which makes it difficult to learn, adapt, grow, and address your actual weaknesses.

The last thing Putin wants right now is pictures of him and Zelensky shaking hands. That was not what his suggestion about negotiations in Turkey on Thursday was about. What Russia wants is low-level negotiations that can go on for months and delay Western decision making.

Putin's cease-fire offer is an attempt to achieve at the negotiating table what he cannot achieve on the battleground: the neutering of Ukraine as a sovereign entity.

TL;DR: It's not about territorial control.

Term 2 Trump foreign policy - from tariffs to NATO to soft power to China and Russia - is an epic mess. One reason seems to be that the administration is operating with two conflicting, equally flawed, views of the world and the US's place in it. 🧵

The fact that you can write one simple prompt in ChatGPT and get the exact same "Tariffs charged to the U.S.A." list is quite telling.

"Create a list of all countries with whichever is greater:

10% or U.S. trade deficit with country divided by U.S. imports from country"
