There is a lot of talk about higher defense spending in NATO, but I think many politicians have failed to explain adequately why that is necessary. So in this video I explain what is at stake for citizens in Western European countries.
Why spend more on defense in Western Europe?

The only U.S. heavy icebreaker turns 50. That's an interesting landmark given recent U.S. criticism of other countries for not taking Arctic security seriously.

I think Greenland is seen as a part of the Western hemisphere, which is mentioned a lot.

2026 is seeing that the U.S. Army is mobilizing a unit specialized for winter conditions, but not knowing if the intended mission is violent repression of an American city or stealing territory from a U.S. treaty ally.

It is in line with the strategy, but at the same time there is a strange obsession with punishing Europe. He could do many other things that would also have been in line with the NSS. There is also a level of incompetence, in that Europe's reaction is entirely predictable to everyone else but Trump.

A bunch of us are working on the practical questions of how to decentralize ATProto and create other strong nodes that complement Bluesky. And Bluesky itself wants this. Coming soon: a European identity for ATProto, 1st step toward Euro infra: www.eurosky.social/register @eurosky.social

This is a unit that is trained for arctic warfare, but I agree that it doesn't make a lot of sense to do it in the winter if summer is an option.
January 18, 2026 at 1:58 PM

It is scary, but the security explanations are basically BS. NATO right now includes the entire arsenal of the U.S. military. The idea that NATO would become incapable of defending Greenland, but the U.S. would be able to do it with fewer forces, is hard to understand.

These troops could be for Minnesota, or they could be for Greenland.

The fact that we have to consider the latter shows Europe is now in a security dilemma with the United States.

We are in a security dilemma with our most powerful "ally."
About 1,500 soldiers w/ 11th Airborne Division in Alaska have been placed on prepare-to-deploy orders with a mission in Minnesota in mind, defense officials tell me tonight. Unclear if some or all of them ultimately will go.

News reported tonight by ABC News, too.

Trump tariffing countries over Greenland is a test. If Europe just swallows it and tries to move on, it increases the odds of the WH thinking it can seize Greenland without consequences. Europe therefore has to respond.

Euro publics have had enough and want their leaders to push back 2/

I tend to think it's actually about Minnesota. They have a pretext for activating the insurrection act, and it's easier to see how that could benefit Trump long-term. An invasion of Greenland right now could cost him his presidency.

It's even more stupid. Greenland is the country of the Greenlanders. No European country owns Greenland, so there is no one to buy it from. He might as well place tariffs on Europe until they sell him the moons of Saturn.

I very much doubt breaking up the world’s strongest military alliance and turning allies into enemies in order to acquire a territory where you can already build as many military bases as you want will improve the security of the United States

Trump can put a million-percent tariffs on Denmark, and it still doesn't change the answer about Greenland. There are only two possible endings to this bizarre story. Either Trump gives up, or else he goes through with a military invasion.
