Sometimes something stupid pops into your head and you gotta write it.
I pulled myself out of the water, the thick syrupy sludge of whatever was not-water in the pond sunk deep into my clothes and clung to my skin. I tried to pull my sleeve off my shoulder only for it to make an upsetting slurp noise that sounded more like my skin being removed than anything made of fabric. I clung to the edge of the pond and caught my breath, I could feel a weight on me that felt different, a slight change that meant that my body was different. I looked down. Fuck. Tits. Of course this wasn't just a random pond I slid down the embankment of, it was a g-d damned reservoir of gender fluid. Not for the first time, of course. These days I fell into one of these fucking things every sixteen minutes, it felt. I could go a month, maybe, if I was lucky, before falling in and having to call my office to let them know my new pronouns. If the gender fluid just changed you from male to female that would be annoying enough, I could see the use or joy in that, but it was the fact that every pond was a mix of a thousand gender expressions and identities. One would make you a high femme binary woman, another would turn you into a raging man-dyke, a third would give you a deep existential longing to have a vagina while cursing you with a furby in its place. Of all the genders found, felt, made up, or thought of, there was a pond of it. And I would probably fall into it. I looked around for my bike. It had, along with me, tumbled over the edge of the path into the pond, which meant it was probably now a moped or something. Did you know that bikes had genders? I didn't until my third visit to the endocrinologist. Its an epidemic, she said to me. These ponds were everywhere and the more they popped up the more headaches they caused. At least for someone who's job was to try and get peoples hormones under control. I got why she would complain, when every one of her patients needed a new regiment every time one of these things popped under their feet. I sat on the grass, kicking my shoes off and letting my feet breathe. My shoes hadn't changed, that's something at least. I wasn't married to my last gender, an agender femme who had somehow gone through top surgery already, but I had maintained it for a good little bit. Now I'd have to find a new discord channel, change my instagram hashtags so the chuds wouldn't hunt me down and accuse me of catfishing them, or faking this whole experience for attention. Yeah, I like having to re-invent myself to try and fit into society every time I slipped. That might be the worst of it, to be honest, the fact that many people didn't even know this was going on. Less than five percent of people experienced the gender pond, they say, which means a solid fifty refused to be believe it existed at all. Many of them were well meaning, I'm sure, but it's always the assholes that take over the conversation. Well, the more people push their gender shit away the more these ponds pop up. That's my theory, anyway. I hid my gender issues for years and now I have to readjust myself to my new reality. Everything has a cost, and ignoring that part of you that is screaming from your soul has to show up eventually. I did a quick exploration. Okay, trans woman, that's fine, I've lived as that before. I could use an old name at least. Mildly nonbinary but not to an extent that anybody would care. Enough that some ladies would refuse me into their club but close enough to the binary to not fit into the nonconforming club either. Okay, there could be worse. I wasn't a spider-cat this time. Did you know that spider-cat was a gender? You do now. I reached into the muck and felt around. I pulled out my, yup, purple moped with a scratched off Harry Potter sticker that had been replaced with a sexy Gardevoir. I stared at it with a sense of familiarity. Was this actually about Gender, or was it just about change? Identity? They say it's gender, but maybe they're wrong. Maybe that's just an aspect. Maybe the feeling that one's identity is immutable, locked into whatever your parents decided, is the problem and not specifically what bits you have. Control, more than tits. Tits were part of it though, among other things. Maybe not. I don't know. I was late for work and my underpants were wet and I was afraid of what my voice sounded like. I took a breath, mounted my moped and started down the road. Five miles later I fell into another pond. Fuck my life.
