The death of browsing is part of the reason art is the way it is now. Our opinions are largely fed to us by algorithms. Spending a spare 15 minutes wandering around a bookstore or comic shop or video rental place was how you found stuff you wouldn't ordinarily pick up and thereby expanded your taste
Bookselling is like the most "people go to the store and buy what looks cool to them without a particular agenda" type business left, and your purchases have a huge influence on what is ordered, what is displayed, and what is recommended.

Patton Oswalt had either a thread or essay touching on this? About how when we used to have to find new/interesting stuff we valued it a bit more because we had to work for it and we got the excitement of discovery and that also made us find and bond with “our people” as they’d had to do the same.

Probably work only three days a week so I could use those two extra days to write and work about the apartment. Maybe try and volunteer a little bit.
Honest question: If everyone got Universal Basic Income, no strings attached, what would YOU do with it?

love to live in a world where all my personal data is relentlessly harvested so that megacorps can feed it into their all-knowing algorithms and yet somehow the end result is that algorithm going “we think you’d like Clarkson’s Farm”

We got the confirmation on her operation for this Monday. If you can help us make sure her recovery process doesn’t have to involve us worrying about bills, please help any way you can!
Five years after her initial breast cancer diagnosis, my wife finally has her reconstruction surgery, but we’re looking for help in covering the wages in the month she’ll need away from work so we can focus on her recovery first and foremost. Anything helps!

Honestly "Don't Engage, Just Block" has transformed my social media experience so profoundly that it's hard for me to describe. It's just so much better to be online now.
i also liked the fact that most of us who had come from the other site had the mentality of not giving "bad actors" the benefit of the doubt on here , and told all to block, not mute, an move on

Not related to anything but I sometimes think abt how one of the stated reasons why Kaizoku subs left nakama as this untranslatable word with no appropriate English equivalent was because "comrade" sounded Too Communist
Fan Subs that Fan Stuck: How Anime Fans Embraced Fansub Terminology: Red Bard examines how Western anime fandom's historical embrace of fansubs led to a unique community jargon, powered heavily by terms discovered in those same fansubs.

You’ve been kidnapped. The characters from the last TV show you watched are coming to rescue you. Who’s coming to save you?

2. It's rare for any creative, including writers, to be able to live solely off their creative income. Moreover, there is no correlation between the creative value of art and the income status of its creator. It's okay to have another gig to eat and pay bills and survive our capitalist hellscape.

1. I see elsewhere on Bluesky that the discourse has turned toward telling writers not to be ashamed to admit they have day jobs or other sources of income (or spousal/family financial support), and you know what, that's 100% correct. Day jobs and support from loved ones are great if you have them!

Great to contribute a commentary to this extraordinary @severinfilms.bsky.social release of Robert Fuest‘s THE FINAL PROGRAMME (1973). Although Britain was crucial to the new wave SF movement in the late 1960s/early 1970s very few of these texts made it to the screen. This was one of the exceptions

What creates the seeming need for a "long and immersive" novel is capitalism. Esp in genre fiction, that expectation for a massive novel is tied to a) the availability of paper in the 1970s b) the amount of money publishers had to pay writers & c) a sense that "more is more." All of this is flawed.
