I like to think this is the CinemaSinsification of media literacy.
• “I didn’t watch it, but TikTok told me it’s problematic.”
• “I didn’t read it, but here’s my take based on screenshots.”
• “I didn’t follow the narrative, but I saw a gifset and that’s enough.”
• “I don’t understand the plot, therefore the writing is bad.”

This is also good advice for authors. Don't let the worse interpretation of your work stop you from making it. Think of the people who will see the best in your work.

Also I think learning the skill of saying "I don't have an opinion on it, but didn't want to watch it" is important too.

I feel like people prioritizing tropes over story is a thing, and that people also don't let characters be bad people for narratives sake. I don't know if those connect? I feel like prioritizing tropes over character can manifest in more ways then just this.

Pro-tip: if you're trying to sell me on your Gargoyles idea or headcanon, please don't invoke The Goliath Chronicles. The moment you do, the shields go up. I can't help it.

Now, invoke the SLG or Dynamite comics, and I might be more receptive.

I'm literally handing you a cheat code.

one zillion opinions online boil down to "oh I heard that X popular person hated this, or the internet called it problematic, so therefore I don't need to judge it myself and will be extremely judgemental of anyone who disagrees with that view"

It fucking infuriates me that there are people out there that would trust the OPINIONS of some ASSHOLE on REDDIT over their OWN EYES, EARS AND CRITICAL THINKING ABILITIES.

oh this is the shit that fucking boils my blood. People actively avoiding the act of engaging with a piece of media and basing every opinion they have of something off of a social media take.

the death of media literacy regularly has me feeling extremely demoralized. Like, what do you mean you didn't understand the metaphor so cleanly and clearly laid out a literal child should be able to pick up on it. What the fuck?

I'm getting war-flashbacks to earlier Tumblr days where if you said you liked an evil character you "automatically co-sign" and approved of all their crimes

Meanwhile I just loved Joffrey because why he was evil made sense to me and his downfall was so satisfying knowing that

People are so terrified of actually engaging with content for some reason. Like are they afraid that they're gonna get canceled or something if they actually engage with something deemed "problematic"??

I don’t think it’s about Tumblr or redemption arcs. The bigger issue is people not understanding nuance at all. They can’t separate depiction from endorsement or moral ambiguity from absolution, so every complex story gets flattened into the wrong moral read.
The demographic raised by Tumblr was messed up bad by media so allergic to depicting black and white morality that redemption arcs became "its okay you committed genocide and theres no reprocussions because the power of friendship saved you"

My first experience with this was People on Tumblr (of course) saying Frank Herbert was a crypto-fascist because Paul Atreides becomes a fascist dictator. When in Messiah, he learns about Hitler and essentially says "I'm worse than Hitler" because his jihad has genocided billions of people
I've noticed this. A lot.

just reminding me how much they destroyed Sokka's growth in the live 'Avatar, the Last Airbender' series because he's sexist (though also a kid) until he gets his ass handed to him by Suki and trains under her, realizing he was wrong, and becomes a better fighter and person because of it.

I've got no problem with MAGAts being scammed. They want to be scammed and are easy to scam. They are begging for it and even if you tell them it is a scam and they got scammed they will argue with you. My only regret is that I'm not getting in on the grift.

Puriteens treat fiction the way religious fundamentalists treat scripture. Every character action must align with their personal sense of moral hygiene. If a character behaves like an actual human being, they take it as an ethical failure on the writer’s part.
