So, I dug a little bit into the story about how the Navy tried searching for a well-connected woman named Dorothy who just happened to have all of these gay friends. The earliest source is Randy Shilts, and his primary source is.... a man later disbarred for forging documents and false testimony.
Dahl contacted local civil-liberties groups, none of which seemed eager to take up his cause; then he called the newspapers, which were. Mel became a cause celèbre, the sailor who said he would fight the Navy's ban on homosexuals in court. This did not win him points with his base commander at Great Lakes Naval Station. By the time the NIS had completed its investigation, the only evidence it had were Dahl's press statements-and a letter that he had written to Senator Paul Tsongas, the Senate's leading champion of gay civil rights, arguing against the ban on gays in the military. Since these represented nothing more than Dahl's legal exercise of his First Amendment rights, Dahl argued that the execution of the new policy represented an unconstitutional infringement on his freedom of speech. A Chicago gay-rights lawyer took the case and Dahl's legal battle against the policy began. Dahl told a newspaper reporter that there were many gays serving at 1981-1985 the base, which spurred the Navy to launch a purge of what they presumed to be a massive network of homosexuals at Great Lakes. In the course of their investigation, NIS agents made a startling discovery-that homo- sexuals sometimes referred to themselves as "friends of Dorothy." This code term had originated in the 1940s and 1950s and referred to Judy Garland's character in the film The Wizard of Oz. Ever since, gay men had identified themselves as "friends of Dorothy." The NIS, however, did not know the phrase's history and so believed that a woman named Dorothy was the hub of an enormous ring of military homosexuals in the Chicago area. The NIS prepared to hunt Dorothy down and convince her to give them the names of homosexuals. In gay bars known to attract military personnel, Dahl learned that NIS agents were asking pointed questions about someone named Dorothy When one unfortunate sailor acknowledged he was gay in order to get out of the Navy, NIS agents sat him down and told him that they knew all about Dorothy. What they wanted to know from him was how to find her. The sailor, who was too young to know the code, was baffled. The search for Dorothy was just one of many subplots unfolding during the crackdown on homosexuals that began with the implementation of the Defense Department's rewritten gay policies. During fiscal year 1981, Defense Department figures, which tended to be conservative, re- corded that 1,976 enlisted men had been routed from the military under the gay regulations. This marked a new record for gay-related discharges in the post-Vietnam era, and it meant a succession of purges from bases around the world. Since virtually all the sailors and soldiers caught up in the military's vast dragnet waived their rights and quietly left the service, few outside the affected bases were even aware that the investigations were going on. People simply disappeared. 'It's a great feeling.' MEL DAHL, defendant Boston lawyer is acquitted of attacking client with knife A Suffolk Superior Court jury yester- day acquitted a Boston lawyer of charges that he tried to murder his client in a bath- room of a downtown Boston office building last year as a result of a business dispute. The jury, which included a priest and a nun among its 12 members, deliberated for five hours before finding Mel Dahl not guilty of attempted murder and assault with a dangerous weapon. "It's a great feeling," Dahl said after the verdict. "I've had a clear conscience for the past 14 months .... It's just wonderful to finally have this behind me." Dahl had been charged with stabbing Farrokh Captain, a Pakistan industrialist who is also a Beacon Hill landlord, in the chest in a bathroom of a Beacon Street of- fice building on Aug. 30, 1994. Captain testified at the trial before Judge Thomas Connolly that Dahl attacked him without provocation. Dahl testified in his own defense that Captain was bleeding from his chest and that he rushed to the aid of his client. Dahl said after the verdict he remains "very angry" at Captain and asserted that Captain has continuing personal "prob- lems." But Captain, who traveled from Pakistan for the trial, said the "only prob- lem I had was being stabbed by him and I'm only sorry that the jury didn't see it." Dahl has filed a defamation suit against Captain in Suffolk Superior Court, and he said yesterday that he will wait a few days before making any "major decisions" about his life. The respondent, under investigation by bar counsel, filed an affidavit of resignation as an attorney with the Board of Bar Overseers (board) pursuant to S.J.C. Rule 4:01, § 15, as appearing in 425 Mass. 1319 (1997).   In this affidavit the respondent “acknowledge[d] freely and voluntarily that the material facts upon which the petition for discipline is predicated can be established by a preponderance of the evidence․  I agree that the evidence ․ is sufficient to establish violations of the Disciplinary Rules set forth in the petition for discipline.   I agree not to contest the facts set forth in the petition․”  Elsewhere in the affidavit, the respondent acknowledged that he understood he could be disbarred as a result of the affidavit.   The board filed the affidavit in the county court along with a recommendation that the respondent be disbarred.   A single justice of this court agreed and ordered the respondent's disbarment. The petition for discipline, which the respondent agreed not to contest, set out facts showing that the respondent had committed numerous ethical violations.   He had used client funds, held in an IOLTA account, for personal purposes, and had lied to clients about the status of their funds.   He had attempted to bill a client for services he never performed.   He caused the introduction of false testimony and forged documents into evidence at a trial in which he was a criminal defendant.   He destroyed evidence sought by bar counsel in the investigation.

Dear Publisher - We recently shared the news that Baker & Taylor was shutting down operations. When we learned they were financially unstable, Ingram took many steps to reduce credit exposure and stock levels, while continuing availability of books to library customers. Those steps were highly successful and the credit balance to the account was brought down significantly over time. At the time they shut down operations, their remaining stock on hand was minimal.
