Unfortunately, in US journalism it is considered neutral to spread a lie, but it is considered "biased" to call out a lie. So, there is a structural asymmetry that rewards colorful lies with virality.

Jamie Dimon doesn’t like sleeping in the bed he did so much to help make

we told you
Dimon on why JPMorgan Chase is not funding WH Ballroom:
We have an issue, which is anything we do, since we do a lot of contracts with governments here and around the world, we have to be very careful how anything is perceived, and also how the next DOJ is going to deal with it.

Hitler was bad.

An essay that, you know, I didn’t think I’d need to write.
Perry: The pro-Hitler problem with the American right
"We need to get back to the basics: Hitler was bad. The people who suggest otherwise are also bad," David M. Perry writes.

Props to the protestors who the New York Times credits for foiling ICE’s intended raid in Chinatown earlier today.

So many people are showing they know what it means to be New Yorkers!

Since Louis CK is in the news again, it's worth restating that he never gave an honest accounting of his sexual misconduct—his initial "apology" and his subsequent statements have been contradicted by the testimony of his victims, and contained elisions and gaps intended to exonerate him.

Demolishing the East Wing of the White House before finalizing plans for what will be built above its ruins is a near-perfect metaphor for Trump's approach to economic policy. The only difference is the wrecking crew doesn’t claim the rubble is evidence of unprecedented growth.

our holiday treat has arrived early—Menswear Guy’s rigorous fisking of Roger Stone’s clothing line
Yesterday, Roger Stone announced his partnership with a menswear company, where together they've released a collection of tailored clothing items.

Here is my review of those pieces. 🧵

tagging in @crankypacifist.bsky.social and @brooklynmarie.bsky.social on this thread from a few weeks back, on the topic of “AI” undermining resistance and resilience
Preliminary results show that the current framework of "AI" makes ppl less likely to help or seek help from other humans, or to seek to soothe conflict, and that people actively prefer that framework to any others, literally serving to make them more dependent on it.
Sycophantic AI Decreases Prosocial Intentions and Promotes Dependence
Both the general public and academic communities have raised concerns about sycophancy, the phenomenon of artificial intelligence (AI) excessively agreeing with or flattering users. Yet, beyond isolat...

I counteroffer a far more encouraging thread for teachers and former teachers

the university is a land of contrasts where many things can be true at once

I believe that we can all dream better dreams than the one we’re living in
Reading a gloomy thread about students who won’t or can’t read or learn and then thinking about the conferences I’ve been having with my students who are writing essays on David Copperfield. Anecdotes are not data and these are upper year majors but they seem generally keen and engaged.

a fascinating and heartbreaking thread, well worth reading for teachers and ex-teachers alike
An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.

but for people having a holiday gathering today, I send my very best wishes

I hope you either have a wonderful time, or a time so bizarre it makes a good story
