Technology Cassandra, photographer, knitter, real hard hitter. Mostly just posts cats, crafts, and garden photos.
Messing around with some photos I took last year. I took the first shot, thought the lighting was flat, so I brought out my gold reflector and got the second. The background lighting looks weird to me so I did a darker exposure from the raw file, combined that with the second image and for the third

What’s happening in Minneapolis is horrifying
Corporate media is lying to you or soft‑pedaling the truth. One outlet is actually reporting from the ground: The Minnesota Star Tribune. It’s a locally owned newsroom with great reporters.
I subscribed.

Fact check: Video, witnesses contradict some of federal officials’ shooting claims
A review of videos taken from different angles of the fatal shooting complicates the narrative that Greg Bovino and Kristi Noem have put forward.

And if LLMs weren't statistical models guessing the next best word to puke out, then this claptrap might be worth reading. Fortunately statistics don't have feelings and won't grow up and don't give a shit about love, so we can ignore this "philosopher" completely.

So I have a new GIS job and it is at a place where I am in a union, and did a strike, and also have the option to work slightly longer days so I get one work day off in ten. So yesterday I had some time to take photos of frost (most of which are still on my camera but here's a couple from my phone)

Ah yes, AI removes the gatekeeping advantage of having learned how to write, and is good because now we can produce more bullshit than ever before

After much careful observation and consideration, I am fairly confident that LLMs would be just as effective as any current CEO or billionaire at running any business, they're both equally full of bullshit.
the discourse on what jobs are acceptable to replace with generative AI reveals a lot about what we think of other people's jobs

I joined a book social media app and I block people for posting reviews that are this ridiculous
Accidentally saw a 1-star review of Guillotine from someone who hated it that basically said, "It was just a bunch of billionaires being gruesomely tortured to death for their crimes," and... did a billionaire write this review?

Many people—particularly in creative and fan spaces!—could use to read Colton Underwood’s short essay about the lived complexities of queer masculinity, the closet, and the negotiations people make to survive… even and especially for those who are already hyper-visible.

Usual reminder: decisions like this don't mean that AI can do the job of a human translator; they mean that some C-suite creature who is basically a LinkedIn profile wrapped in ham and an expensive suit has decided it provides an alibi for paying human translators less money for less rewarding work.
French publishing house Harlequin decided to use AI translation instead of human translations.

All their freelance translators (some of whom had been working with Harlequin for +30y!!!) were told they would no longer receive work from Harlequin

In a move that surprises exactly no one, AI and cryptocurrency scams were just bilking people so that tech fascists could go live out their Ayn Rand-inspired fantasies in third world countries.
"Srinivasan himself has started a 'Network School' on an artificial island near Singapore, where techno-optimists can work their day jobs remotely while living in a hotel together and learning how to 'bootstrap'... a new society [ — ] 'society-as-a-service'"
Tech elites are starting their own for-profit cities
They want to escape from regulation and ‘failing’ democracy — but are they more opportunistic than libertarian?

I dunno, man, maybe because the last two movies I *really* wanted to see in the theater are only playing in, like, 5 theaters in a 50 mile radius and they all stink? Neither Frankenstein nor Wake Up, Dead Man are coming to my CITY, and I hate it.
