Remember the burst of posts in October claiming Taylor Swift was a Nazi/trade wife/selling SS merch? It was a bot farm.

AND: Researchers "discovered 'a significant user overlap between accounts pushing the Swift Nazi narrative & those active in a separate astroturf campaign attacking Blake Lively."

Just in general there are a lot of factors that go into college choice, and a school/program they'll actually finish is a better investment than one where they're miserable and stop out partway through.
As parents are helping their kids consider colleges, this is my perennial reminder that state schools often have lower price tags, yes, but private schools, including many small liberal arts schools, often have better aid packages, and are thus often cheaper in the end (but may be more competitive).

I like this proposal to progressively tax high CEO-to-worker pay ratios. This is what every tax should consider—how it can shape behavior in a desired direction.

I'll add that I think this should be paid in newly issued shares into a national UBI-paying fund that all corps should pay into annually.

"But what does that say about my job if a machine that's wrong 75% of the time can do for me and no one notices?"

Hi, you are participating in the most inefficient and needlessly cruel version of UBI possible.
this is similar to what I've come to think of as the "reverse turing test"

when people find synthetic text is "good enough" to complete a task (homework, business report, email) it doesn't mean the machine is smart. it means they were asked to produce something that didn't matter

it's diagnostic
So similarly, when we see people who prefer ChatGPT or a similar synthetic text extruding machine as a source of medical information, that means those are people who are under-served in the current system.

also always deeply funny that every sci-fi video game from 1999-2014 was trying to be Aliens, and copied everything except the...working class woman protagonist
Everyone imitates Tolkien all the time except when it comes to the one way it would really matter: making the protagonist of your novel for children a short, fat, 50-year-old man who doesn't want to do anything.

What makes me angriest about the fake AI videos where people yell at ICE is that there’s a million actual videos, there’s actual priests being pelted with pepper balls, it’s just that the real priest didn’t say “we worship the real God not your ORANGE one” so he wasn’t quippy enough

Registered charity or direct to the person who needs it, the vague "a portion of proceeds/profit" stuff is a red flag. The real game bundles & charity auctions are happy to spell out the terms and don't pressure you in random pubs. Also magazines & candy are disproportionately scams in my experience
If they aren’t a registered charity and they aren’t registered with the Fundraising Regulator (example logo below), it’s probably one of these scammy orgs where the ‘profit’ is a tiny fraction of the money you handed over and some bastard gets rich on your good intentions. Give to a real charity.

The most important political fault line of our time is over whether children are people or property.
This whole so-called “parents rights” movement the right has taken up and the left is supposed to kowtow to for votes is so obviously anti-child it really bothers me to see it presented as anything other than justification for abusive “parenting” and disregard for actual science on child development
