NHANES is an invaluable tool that many researchers including myself use to report on conditions in the general population.

Like the fact that ~40% of 12-21yo females are iron deficient.

NHANES gave the first clear evidence that too many Americans had too much lead in their blood leading to unleaded gasoline requirements, and its data are part of children's growth charts ubiquitous in pediatricians' offices.

NHANES runs mobile clinics that travel the country measuring height, weight, & blood pressure while collecting blood and urine samples. These samples are our only national source for tracking everything from blood sugar to hormones, heavy metals, and more.

The entire operation has been eliminated.

Everyone across biomedicine should be very loud about this so this team's RIF status gets reversed. Nhanes has been key for tracking obesity & diabetes rates, identifying high blood lead levels in kids in the 70s, tracking progress on cholesterol lowering, guiding nutrient fortification programs etc

A sad but necessary sequel to "We Want Them
Infected"

Dr. Howard's previous book "We Want Them Infected" meticulously documented the lies and disinformation of anti-science contrarian physicians during the COVID-19 pandemic. WWTI was a wake-up call to the damage these physicians could do if allowed to continue unopposed. Well, continue with minimal opposition these physicians did, and, just as thoroughly, Dr. Howard has documented here in
"Everyone Else is Lying to You" how these disinformers parlayed their prevarications into positions of power within the HHS. Like WWTI, EEILTY was a book I had to take a chapter at a time, due mostly to the overwhelming dismay at how few people did anything to oppose this clearly coordinated overthrow of the US public health system. As someone who professionally worries about anti-vaccinationism, I followed in real time much of what Dr. Howard has written, but the amount of disinformation put forth by and on behalf of these physicians is much better appreciated through the narrative-specific chaptering of EEILTY. In the final chapter of this book, Dr. Howard writes "I can only hope that future medical leaders learn from these mistakes and show some backbone." To that I agree and state that a great place to start learning from these mistakes is this book. --Chris Hickie MD, PhD

A recent study of electronic health records found racial bias in clinicians' assessment of patients' credibility19 Specifically, "clinicians were more likely to insinuate in the electronic health record that black
compared to white patients were not truthful and not competent in reporting their own experiences." In the emergency department, black patients wait longer to be seen by a clinician.

We made ChatGPT pretty restrictive to make sure we were being careful with mental health issues. We realize this made it less useful/enjoyable to many users who had no mental health problems, but given the seriousness of the issue we wanted to get this right.

Now that we have been able to mitigate the serious mental health issues and have new tools, we are going to be able to safely relax the restrictions in most cases.

In a few weeks, we plan to put out a new version of ChatGPT that allows people to have a personality that behaves more like what people liked about 4o (we hope it will be better!). If you want your ChatGPT to respond in a very human-like way, or use a ton of emoji, or act like a friend, ChatGPT should do it (but only if you want it, not because we are usage-maxxing).

In December, as we roll out age-gating more fully and as part of our “treat adult users like adults” principle, we will allow even more, like erotica for verified adults.
