they didn't need AI to make Silksong, it just needed some deeply insane guys to have a blank check for living expenses until their next thing was done, I think we should try doing more of that instead

this whole thread is excellent.

when i was researching for my dissertation i found a lot of old papers on grammar checking (yes, like, red squiggles in ms word) from the 70s that referred to the task as "artificial intelligence." you cannot use this term in any serious discussion
Wildly different things, tasks, techniques, subspecialties being lumped into "AI" and then being conflated with each other, doesn't help. Different types of models vs the techniques to train them vs the tasks they are supposed to accomplish, all under "AI".

Accessibility without verifiability isn’t clarity—it’s risk transfer. AI summaries don’t simplify truth; they abstract accountability. If readers can’t validate claims, the output degrades from aid to liability.
I don't know how many times this needs to be said, but apparently a lot: If you are not in a position to verify the accuracy of some synthetic text, the synthetic text is not useful/has a high potential to be misleading.

This is one of those cases.
The rationale I was given for AI Summaries *alongside* ordinary abstracts:

* The AI-generated summaries are intended to be more accessible to non-experts.

I keep getting paywalled out from reading updates on the local floods... I get that the Seattle Times needs to pay their journalists but surely when we're in a state of emergency they can be a bit more lenient?!?

my take on fonts is that using either Times New Roman or Calibri as the official font for government documents is insane. you should have a government font that the government commissions and thus places in the public domain. it's like if every government memo was stamped with a Microsoft watermark.

I mean we are absolutely in a place now where the only solution to this information disorder is for everyone to constantly evaluate the source of information. Never trust a chatbot, but also don't believe a video unless you know and trust where it comes from.

Unfortunately... that's a lot of work.

The pot has a drainage hole so she can get out in the spring. But anyway if you haven't raked your leaves yet, this is your sign to just leave them where they are. At this point they are habitat for overwintering critters.

Particularly from a disability lens but if I go into that conversation it'll be properly cited and in a longer format

Make Thanksgiving Radical Again
The holiday’s real roots lie in abolition, liberation, and anti-racism. Let’s reconnect to that legacy.

Ignoring the small bit about critics from the left and emotion here, this is an article that people REALLY need to be reading and sharing. This is the glaring thing at the center of economic data that's gone ignored for a LONG time.

If you use GMail, AI (Gemini) was turned on yesterday by default and now scans all of your content for machine learning. To turn off, go to Settings>General and scroll down. Uncheck the box for "Smart features."

There's other "Smart" add-ons as well, but that's the one that reads your content.
