Yesterday former Police Commissioner Andrew Coster said that he had briefed Ministers over both Labour and National governments about the case concerning Jevon McSkimming, claims that they both deny. While it's important we get to the bottom of this, there is another important truth here. Amongst the media frenzy, with people seeking to lay blame on others, that this is a distraction from what matters most here. For far too long, victims/survivors of sexual assault have not been believed when they disclose violence and assault. Thave heard time and time again that victims/survivors end up regretting disclosing violence because they are not believed, and worse - they end up being blamed for the violence done to them. This understandably leads to further trauma for victims/survivors, and many have ended up being dismissed and the harm done to them, minimised. This is often before cases reach a formal investigation point: When I was Minister in the last government, we made a long-term plan for accountability from the systems that have perpetrated further harm upon victims/survivors who seek support and justice. These systems include Crown agencies such as the Police. This case clearly shows how important this work is and that it must continue and be supported properly by all governments of the day. As this goes on, I want to make sure we remember whose voices are silenced in these media blame games. To those victims/survivors - I see you, I hear you, and we will fight for you to have justice.
