“That’s our message to people - we can change this.”

It’s great to see a party leader being so matter of fact about policy basics and unequivocal about the fact they are absolutely possible to achieve for New Zealanders.

Huge credit to the Greens that they’ve done all the hard yards & for basically every policy gap headline between now and the election can say “We’ve got a plan for that.”
Love to see common-sense policy treated as a given, not “radical” - imo we can’t focus on true aspiration without accepting this.

I used to be a kids doctor and one of my major interests has always been about how economic inequity affects a population’s health (esp kids). If people researched it properly (not just listened to influencers on FB/YT), then I think they’d also be much more likely to vote Green.
December 14, 2025 at 6:00 AM
Absolutely this.

Calling bare minimum, literally-your-one-job policy aspirational and unrealistic only serves to further embed and normalise inequity - and enhance the wealth of others.

It’s not aspirational to have affordable housing, food and power, and accessible health - it’s 101 governance.
This is such patronising bullshit. We’re not aspiring to “unrealistic” things like a three-day work week, a holiday house and a pony. We want kids fed, a health system, a role in life for everyone. Those things aren’t unrealistic, they’re a *choice* successive governments are making to deny us.
"We've had a series of governments now who have encouraged people to be aspirational for New Zealand and have promised things that have been completely unrealistic. ... I'm not going to fall into that trap."

It beggars belief that, even with this milquetoast centrist nonsense so incredibly unpopular and ineffective in the US and UK, Labour are still committed to running on it. Read the room guys. Read any of the rooms.

Reflecting that governments deeply invested in retaining the status quo do little to repair any kind of prior erosion or devastation, so reinforce the damage done.
Aspirational governments get more done because change is the focus - rocking the boat is seen as both a vital need and an accepted risk:

Apropos of nothing.
If you’re looking for a lift- and for policy that doesn’t hide bare minimum ideas behind the rhetoric of progress - take a look at the Greens platform.
For me, a timely reminder that we don’t move forward by lowering our expectations, but by affirming that hard things can and should be done.👇

As @captcaffiend.bsky.social pointed out recently, when psychological abuse is factored in, our violence stats increase to one in two women (55%).

We should be noting this stat in every story like the below.
This isn’t a one-off, it’s a demonstrable cultural norm - we need to write about that, too.

So we’ve had Bishop deliberately not seeking the House’s approval for a massively truncated select committee period for one bill, and now the Minister of Justice deliberately circumventing the rules on omnibus bills.

Attacks on normal procedure will harm public trust.

“Fascism protects elite wealth.”

Really interesting 🧵 and food for thought in a current environment where many political decisions are rooted in protecting and enhancing wealth at the expense of everyone else.
Someone recently asked what wealth inequality and oligarchy has to do with fascism and why we should focus on regulating billionaires and balancing the wealth inequality and not fascism. So I’m going to create a thread explaining how wealth inequality helps drive the fascism. It’s connected. 🧵
