I’m dealing with an older person who needs increased care. Does anyone know if I can request a NASC directly or do I need to go through the GP, who is unhelpful at the best of times? Thoughts appreciated 🙏

Extremely important discussion of the anti-scientific, bigoted, transphobic government action this week
1/200 S2E173 - Puberty Blocker Ban

We speak with @jennifilm.nz about the ideologically motivated, against all evidence, decision by the National coalition government to effectively ban puberty blockers specifically for trans children.

“Little rewarded the conservative councillors who ran a self-described “campaign of disruption” throughout his predecessor Tory Whanau’s mayoralty by giving them control of four of the most powerful committees.”

Labour: Women are worth it, except when it’s not politically convenient. Then hell no.
Andrew Little buddies up to the right
In his first council meeting as Wellington mayor, Andrew Little opened a political rift between Labour and the Greens.

Nothing today either.

If you are an ally/voter/concerned about further restrictions to healthcare that this move is a trial balloon for, and you’re wondering how long is too long to wait to speak up, imo any official response now is inauthentic - and inspires zero confidence for support in future.
Labour is now the only Opposition party who has not put out an official press release denouncing the NZ government’s restrictions to healthcare access for trans youth and affirming their strong support for the trans, takatāpui and rainbow communities.

T-22 days until this govt enacts legislation that directly and explicitly breaches the Bill of Rights Act to discriminate against trans people, and Labour are still yet to publicly commit to fixing it.

Reflecting that the sheer pace/scale of this erosion & damage has never happened in our history - & has been absolutely deliberate to ensure, even they don’t get another term, that a centrist government will do little to reverse the damage. The thought of a second round of this decimation is dire.🫠

“In addition to environmental protection and public transport, regional councils sometimes also own ports.”

“If these reforms go ahead, councils may lose their authority at the exact moment ministers acquire unprecedented fast-track powers.”

Quiet part out loud etc
Concern as end of regional councils tipped in local government reforms
Sources are worried about what would become of the environmental protection aspect of regional councils, with an announcement about their future expected today.

(9/10) We can no longer look to the US for leadership on rights. We must hold the line here in Aotearoa. We must defend our definition of rights: one that prioritises the safety of the vulnerable over the "liberty" of others to harm them.

Noting the block the ban protest on the 7th for Aucklanders.

I would add donate money to Rainbow Youth, Gender Minorities Aotearoa or any other organisation which provides support to our gender diverse young people.

Donate money and/or time to a political party committed to reversing this ban.

Would add “or for someone who can’t make up their minds whether it’s politically convenient to officially support the communities they say they support.”

Nothing from the main party or the leader or the Health spokesperson. Their Rainbow Communities spokesperson (Halbert) and Duncan Webb made decent statements but it's really disappointing that there's no commitment yet from Labour to repeal the decision or anything.

With Christmas parties coming up and Ariana Grande in the news for getting Covid during the press tour for Wicked, semi-regular reminder Covid is still a thing and you might want to get a booster, plan for open/ventilated spaces, ask for testing/test yourself, and stock up on those antihistamines.

Can I just point out that these warnings are far, far from empty alarmism. Look at the states. Repro rights orgs started warning people years ago as the antis chipped away at our rights until finally Roe v Wade fell. We can’t let it happen here. We need a new govt. #nzpol
The banning of gender affirming care/ puberty blockers for trans kids is a TEST. This Luxon-led coalition is seeing how much pushback they receive on this issue to figure out how to ban abortion & contraception next term. They're anti-choice, they will act on this. #nzpol #abortion #pubertyblockers

Great to see this from individual MPs but when it’s not coming from the top, and there’s no official statement or press release on Labour’s website, this doesn’t bode well for a future where, following this trial balloon focusing on trans youth, further restrictions to healthcare are very likely.
Doctors and parents should make decisions about what is best for their kids health - not politicians. The Government has said doctors cannot give new prescriptions of puberty blockers to children who are suffering from gender dysphoria. That is putting kids at risk.
