I'm not strong enough for another round of "but HOW can you not love James Cameron's Avatar?!" discourse.

Partner ended up making the chicken soup because guess who woke up sick.
Last week partner made leek and potato soup for us to have during the week and this weekend I made split pea soup. Next weekend I might do a chicken soup so I can turn it into a pot pie.

Reading Natalie Haynes books Pandora's Jar and Divine Might were some really great insights into scholarly work.
What historians (and other scholars do) is create knowledge. We should use that phrase more and talk about what it means. I think we don't, and it's part of why AI enthusiasts are confused when we don't readily agree that our work can be replicated/replaced by their products.

My cats breed is a combination of goblin, Night Fury, and a little bit of orange chaos (they are all black).
So, what breed IS your cat?

None.
(None breed, left beef.)

Wha? How?
Cat breeds are just NEW. Despite them living with us for thousands of years, we only have about 40-150 years of cat breeds existing, and they aren't out mixing with random cats.

97-99% of cats are breedless!

I'm so tired of everything being called 'AI'. And programs getting renamed to 'apps' and everything making its own app...
Spell check existed long before genAI and in its most basic function is not genAI. Spell check is code. It's a function. It checks against a database of available words. Spell check in certain programs, however, may have been made worse by running it through genAI.

this thread details with an insider's view how the nytimes pushed anti-trans bigotry

when i say the NYTimes deserves neither your money nor your respect, i also mean NYTimes cooking, NYTimes puzzles, crosswords, connections, and wordle, the wirecutter, the athletic, and all their podcasts.
How the nyt used the Cass report to restart its anti-trans propaganda campaign in the US:
Coverage of the report was initially assigned to a nyt UK correspondent, usual practice for a UK report. The story being prepared cited critics who called Cass a shoddy, political document that defied science
One reason the NYT has burned its credibility with trans people is that they still cite the discredited Cass report in reporting on trans healthcare. Never the German, Utah, or other systematic reviews supporting care. They also never provide the political context behind restrictions in care.

before you make posts like this, I need y’all to care as much about actual IRL people and the actual consequences they experience professionally, personally, psychologically, etc. as you do about your desire to feel that you watching a hot TV show is activism making the world a better place

I keep wanting to say something, and I keep not knowing what to say.

The trans community does not harm cis people by existing. They are just trying to live their lives, same as anyone else. That life doesn't look exactly like mine; my life doesn't match anyone else's. That's okay.

Does anyone write up an end of year article talking about what our federal level reps have done throughout the year?

It's been a little surreal reading posts from around the country praising the Minneapolis Police Department for standing up to ICE and saying more police departments should be like the MPD.

I saw this piece in person and love it so much. This picture doesn't do it anything close to just how cool it is. Have it as a background on my work computer and it makes me happy every time I see it.

I'm so fucking angry
Also, 4 Republicans voted nay (Cruz, Lee, Moran, and Paul) & 3 didn't vote (Daines, Hawley, & Moody). Meaning this bill absolutely could not have passed this stage without the support of the Democrats.

As always so greatful to live somewhere where voting is easy. My polling place is in walking distance, it's always got great people working there who are happy help get you to the right spot, I'm in a state where registration is easy.

I'm trying to remain calm but my shy, doesn't want to be touched cat didn't run away when I sat next to him on the bed. And he faced away from me in a "well I'm going to try to go back to napping" attitude.

Make Falcon Heights part of St Paul!
Fun Fact: The Students Living on the Saint Paul campus could easily trigger a vote to dissolve the city that they actually live in- Falcon Heights

Top comment: 'Do it for the troll! Also f*** 3M for what they've done to the water.'
