Claude the albino alligator is dead

My story with @aidinvaziri.bsky.social

Lots of cool facts from biologists I've interviewed. Claude knew his name & briefly had a pit-mate named "Bonnie." Most common question from guests: "Is he real?"

RIP to an SF icon

This is an insightful but deeply upsetting article about why everyone in the US feels poor, and why the current political situation emerges as a direct result.

i think if you want to have those disgusting LED headlights on your car, you should have to do a test where they blast you point blank with your own headlights and then you have 15 seconds to successfully complete some sort of vision-based task, and if you can't do it they push your car off a cliff

i think if you ride public transit enough you learn that most weird behavior is not dangerous, and conversely i think driving a car teaches you that everyone is trying to kill you at all times

The Autry Museum was the sleeper hit of my museums-and-bookstores trip to LA a couple of weeks ago, and this exhibit was one of the big reasons why.

You’ve got to be kidding me sf.
If the chatbot is launched in the coming weeks, hundreds of marginally housed RV dwellers could soon have just days to pull out their phones, navigate to a city website and ask a chatbot how to get a permit to allow them to continue to park on city streets.

San Francisco’s latest answer for RV dwellers? An AI chatbot.
The San Francisco Mayor's Office is testing a new solution for RV dwellers' pressing questions on an upcoming parking ban, sources say.

I bet that even the MUNI fans I know don't realize how much SF MTA is responsible for.

This is a great short video about an incredibly important part of government in San Francisco. Put it on during your lunch hour or play it while going for a ride on MUNI.

We need more wacky utopian ideas in municipal politics. Municipal groceries stories are fine but what if cities bought out failing office buildings and built massive vertical farms, employing thousands

fundamentally, a big problem with relying on private charity is that it relies on the largesse of a small number of individuals and - at least in a vaguely functional system of government - is therefore much easier to lose because it only needs one or two people to change their minds
Not trying to call out this post in particular but something I think about a lot is George Lakoff's observation that liberals respond to budget cuts by replacing them with private charity instead of with directing money to try to reverse the budget cuts
