I’m an Australia software engineer currently living in the US. My language of choice is Ruby. I’m also a tabletop role playing game fan.

Most of my posts are about TTRPGs, with a smattering of coding-related posts. Refer down-thread for a TTRPG starter pack and a coupe of TTRPS feeds I maintain.
Almost added dour cream to my grocery list. No thanks, I don’t need a buzzkill for Thanksgiving.

Patient came in with sore throat. While waiting for rapid Strep test result we glanced back at the Covid-19 RAT result: positive. Reminder that masking in health care makes sense, if you don’t want everyone in your waiting room to go home sick, your staff to get sick, and physicians to get sick.

Hear. Fucking. Hear. The “AI” medical researchers use to develop new cancer therapies (for example) is a very different thing from the “AI” Musk thinks would be fun to use to roast people at parties.
Journalist challenge: Use “Machine Learning” when you mean machine learning and “LLM” when you mean LLM. Ditch “AI” as a catch-all term, it’s not useful for readers and it helps companies trying to confuse the public by obscuring the roles played by different technologies. 🧪

If you’re a journalist who’s still on Twitter, from now on in your writing you have to replace “the American people want” with “troll bots in Eastern Europe demand”

Being there makes your judgment suspect. I don’t care how savvy you think you are, you’re marinating in a disinformation campaign.

Fun fact: this is explicitly why Dick Wolf created Law & Order: he violently hates defense attorneys and felt tere weren't enough shows about how defendants and their lawyers are scum

(also when somebody "gets off on a technicality" that actually means the cops committed a crime against them)

I'm English. Lovely place, England, but Big Geological Drama? None of that round 'ere, sadly.

Imagine my delight at what geophysicists found in the English Channel.

Because the goals are diametrically opposed and mutually exclusive. Businesses exist to make money. Governments exist to make people's lives better.
