One of my wife’s best friends is a very sweet Guatemalan lady who is very progressive in all things and also thinks Belize is a fake country that should return to Guatemala
Belize-Guatemala and Guyana-Venezuela; in both cases the former Spanish colony claims a large part of the territory of the former British, but the latter controls it, has done for decades, it's populated by its citizens, and "who actually lives there" trumps "who thinks their Empire had it first"

Ooh so this is a really good question and worth exploring, because there's an interesting complexity in the answer! 🧵
Did the Choshu/Satsuma forces face similar discipline problems or was the lesser degree to which they did so part of the reason they won?

Very good series on just how uninspired the design language of the upcoming Odyssey movie is and the genuinely harmful stereotypes it seem to be carrying forward.
Ok so my Nolan rant about removing colors and pizzazz from Greek late Bronze Age apparently interested a lot of people!

I knew studying Ancient Greek and losing my mind on Homeric grammar would pay off some day…

Here’s a few articles on the subjects from cool classicists and scholars ✨

Every Western politician should know this quote by heart before opining on Russia-Ukraine. Of course the Russians want peace—it’s quite inconvenient for them that the Ukrainians are contesting their conquest!
“The aggressor is always peace-loving (as Bonaparte always claimed to be); he would prefer to take over our country unopposed.” -Clausewitz
Not saying the soldiers who were sent there were evil, they were figthing for their country.
What I condemn was the actions of Margaret Thatcher wich caused hundreds of deaths.
And the dictatorship oppressing Argentina didn't care much about winning war, just sent thousands of conscripts

Lincoln was re-elected on a party platform saying "That foreign immigration, which in the past has added so much to the wealth, development of resources and increase of power to this nation, the asylum of the oppressed of all nations, should be fostered and encouraged by a liberal and just policy."
They're not hiding it, folks—straight up neo-Nazi advertising, from the font to the language to the 11 stars for the Confederacy. Then you have the DHS openly using white nationalist language of "remigrate", which means ethnic cleansing.

This is who MAGA is now.

Fascinating. Bibi did nothing wrong but leftishly.
And of course the main culprit for the situation in Palestine is the British Empire with its divide and conquer logic, opposed by Montagu. Just like the situation in India and Pakistan. Don’t blame “bigotry” by ordinary Indian and Pakistani people while forgetting British imperialism.

Fallen for Finland and Nordic freedom. Glory to the heroes.
One who actually managed to join the 🇫🇮 army in time was 1st Lt Hans Fenger of the Guard Hussars who served in the 2nd squadron of the 🇫🇮 cavalry regiment Nylands Dragonregemente and was killed in action 17 February at Lake Ladoga.

The upper-left most quote always annoys me. Like common Emmanuel, “a good program is a program that works” is textbook Dengism not Maoism.

Incredible how pretty much any sufficiently widely seen post saying "I think it's bad how people are prejudiced to trans people" inevitably attracts a whole host of replies going "But I don't see why you won't consider that trans people aren't real so prejudice against them doesn't count/matter?"
yes I don't really see how you can go "oh yikes these people have changed their political views incredibly quickly, mostly because of what Very Online people talk about on social media" and also think that people who went from never talking about gender to calling trans women predators are....normal
I don’t like subtweeting people I consider online friends, but there is a subset of people who are very worried about the ongoing radicalisation of our political elite but won’t ever acknowledge the echoes with the radicalisation of their colleagues on trans rights

God it's so cool that so much of British and European nationalist politics has broadly been shaped by warehouse clickfarms rented by guys in South Asia running "how to make money from racist old people" workshops, and that this has had more influence on media and politics than any grassroots group

🕯 Eternal memory to all victims of Holodomor. A moment of silence.
