Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?

I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

Most of them don’t work directly with Rowling, they work with a production company. And most of them are offline and insulated from the discourse. Add to this that many probably are slightly transphobic and think Rowling goes over the top but have basically justified concerns.

A discussion the other day has me reading up on the early Cold War Swedish nuclear weapons programme (my insane beloved) and while I suppose it’s somewhat admirable they planned on primarily aiming for tactical targets I do wonder if they understood that basically meant “fuck them balts?”

The incessant attack on “godhetssignalering” as the name is in Swedish is one of the most damaging aspects of modern society. The embrace of cynicism is corrosive to social movement and essentially leaves out any attempt at societal advancement.
