at the the of the day, you can try to litigate and legislate lying, but you can’t force good faith and no amount of regulating the truth can fix society if its participants aren’t good faith members of the same project
the fact that dealing with rampant lying and its much worse downstream consequences involves cultivating values rather than just imposing formal frameworks or rules (legal or otherwise) is a tough pill to swallow for some. but it is indeed medicine
Pointing out that something is incorrect definitely isn't sufficient - the *culture* of "it is bad to make incorrect statements, good to promptly and clearly retract and apologize for them, and disqualifying to keep making them deliberately" is the framework needed for fact-checking to plug into.

The reason that we reporters are focused so intensely on the L'affair Nuzzi is that, as Olivia notes, it is a basically apocalyptic scandal in the most literal sense of that term: a dropping of masks. It's acting as confirmation of every hideous story anybody's ever told about political journalists
this was bad before, but these are the most troubling and serious allegations you can make about a journalist. if they’re true, i genuinely can’t think of a worse scandal in the history of political journalism. devastating to our industry, to public trust as a whole, and to everyone in its orbit

I think people's interest in this DC-journo train wreck is understandable (and so is the desire to unsee it); I hope folks understand that it's not a soap opera and, in fact, the reason it's so grotesque is that the people involved are treating it like one.

So we all have flu A and can't see our family for Thanksgiving. Am super sad about this, and obviously exhausted. But my incredible partner realized that, as a silver lining on my end, that means we can do versions of our own dishes entirely catered to my dietary restrictions.
