“Whale hive, do your thing”
Finished rereading Moby-Dick (very slowly!) and the last pages show that Melville really knew how to write taut, fast-paced, plot-driven prose, and so just chose not to for hundreds of pages.

It's utterly insane, but statistically probably unsurprising, that there was more than one Brown student who had previously experienced a mass school shooting, including one who was actually shot, @miatretta.bsky.social.

It doesn't have to be this way.
We sadly know Zoe Weissman because of Parkland. In fact, our families are so close, that she has been there for my wife and I after Parkland and helped with our foundation Orange Ribbons For Jaime.

America, are you ok with this?

“What I’ve been feeling most is just, like, how dare this country allow this to happen to someone like me twice?” Weissman told the New York Times.
"Weissman was in her dorm room at Brown when a friend called to warn her that a shooting was under way. Her initial feelings of panic soon turned to anger, she told NBC. “I’m angry that I thought I’d never have to deal with this again, and here I am eight years later,” Weissman told NBC News."
Two survivors of Brown University attack escaped other school shootings
Mia Tretta was shot in the abdomen in 2019 at a school near LA and Zoe Weissman witnessed a Florida shooting in 2018

Twitter accounts are based in Russia. BlueSky accounts are based in homes with, frankly, too many books, plants, obsolete cables, and pieces of rustic pottery, that could do with a bit of a tidying up, to be honest.

A lot of people think that every international student admitted means one fewer spot for domestic students, when the opposite is more likely true - the tuition revenue international students bring allows public universities to provide substantial discounts to domestic students, improving access.

Not everything you know goes in the book/article/thesis/dissertation! So much of what we learn and know for each project is part of the iceberg - background and details necessary for our understanding but presumed, inferred, or unnecessary to the reader. Only a fraction of the iceberg is visible!

We have had a lot of conversations in my department about how to deconstruct the idea of an essay as a “product” and reconstruct what we were always using it for to begin with: how to teach critical thinking, audience analysis, support with evidence, research, source evaluation and scrutiny, etc.
I gotta say I find a lot of AI discourse around higher ed very confusing. "if ChatGPT can write your essays is college even worth it?" did people think math teachers were assigning problem sets because *they* couldn't figure out the answers?

It is difficult to imagine any circumstances in which the assassination of one democratic lawmaker and the attempted assassination of another is not fascist violence, calculated to suppress political resistance to a fascist project. At this point I am not going to try.

The White House's stated intent to use expedited removal for this guy's family is flatly ILLEGAL. By law, expedited removal ONLY applies to people not admitted at a port of entry, or here without having been "admitted or paroled" into the US.

But his family was admitted at an airport on visas!
