All lit up, before solder, and before foil.

Need to work out better ways to get the solder down, 0.5mm of slippage here or there adds up fast.

How much are you going to pay doctors?

Which current hospitals get shut down ?

What happens if doctors opt out of the system ? Who is going to invest in new curative therapies. You ?

How much in taxes pr year do you think it's possible to collect if you took every penny from billionaires?
Half the amount that everyone currently pays could provide universal healthcare. Private health companies don’t need to exist. Eliminate them. And use your collective buying power and economies of scale to get it done. Every cent of their profit is healthcare denied.

In general, AI adoption levels are a measurement of to what extent a particular reward system (a corporation, a market, academia as a whole system) has ceased to distinguish between doing a thing and pretending to do a thing
One of many things the pro-AI crowd doesn't seem to understand is the very important distinction between academic scholarship and the production of papers. Of course they can be related but they're not necessarily the same thing

All you really need to understand about water usage in the western United States is that every single use - even the ones that sound egregiously wasteful like AI data centers - rounds down to 0 compared to what irrigated agriculture uses

From Partiful's "your year in review" stats.

I am simultaneously dubious and insistent that the rest of you need to do better.

I particularly enjoyed* the clip of the interview with Bendetsen where he argued that it was unfair to compare him in any way to Adolf Eichmann because he was just following orders.
Surprise! Happy holidays!

The final two episodes of "Burn Order" were due to be posted this Monday, December 15th. But here they are, a little early.

This is the complete series -- a total of six episodes.

Two months of recovery and PT and patience down, four to go before I can return to activities that seriously load my sternum.

Lotta walkin'. But it's lovely to be able to start ramping up the heartrate and ramping down the bradycardia-inducing drugs.

Sometimes people are like "aren't you worried about the kids and their nonsensical new brainrot memes"

But like, the thing is, I can still spot a member of my internet generation by how they respond to "badger badger badger badger"

Playing with language and rhythm is fun, it'll be fine!
One of the things we've enjoyed the most about the six-seven phenomenon is the way it comes with a gesture, which we've also seen represented in emoji form as:
🫴 six-seven 🫳
“6-7” belongs in the dictionary, actually

this is similar to what I've come to think of as the "reverse turing test"

when people find synthetic text is "good enough" to complete a task (homework, business report, email) it doesn't mean the machine is smart. it means they were asked to produce something that didn't matter

it's diagnostic
So similarly, when we see people who prefer ChatGPT or a similar synthetic text extruding machine as a source of medical information, that means those are people who are under-served in the current system.

TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:
"This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".

"Found In Translation" 490 pcs., 15"x15"x1", 2 layers, D: 9.8/10 - this was the trickiest puzzle commission of the year, hands down. I am pretty good at cutting weird tiny shapes but doing 200+ hieroglyph drop-outs and keeping all the surrounding pieces nice and connected was a real challenge.
