Oh boy I know this one! Yep, the Japanese word 青い (aoi) was historically used for shades of both blue and green. The word 緑 (midori) developed more recently to refer specifically to green, so now 青い is pretty much just used for blue except in specific contexts.

For example, Japanese speakers will refer to a traffic light as being 青い instead of 緑. Also, there's a region in northern Japan called 青森 ('Blue Forest').
