Wow, real banana republic stuff. I'm glad our presidents can launder money and associate criminally without worrying about this kind of thing.

It's an extension of the larger assumptions in our political media -- Democrats are the only ones with any agency or morality, while the awfulness of Republicans is taken as a fixed constant.
been trying to place the the cognitive dissonance I feel with “to serve his country, Biden should step aside” and I think it’s that no one would ever suggest that Trump should do something that puts the country first

A few years ago, Jon Lovett floated a theory that media treats Democrats like protagonists - to be challenged, accounted, and forced to be behave in growth-oriented ways - while the GOP are treated like antagonists - immutable, expected to disrupt, thematic obstacles.

Thinking about that a lot.
I don’t recall the NYT calling for Trump to step down after being convicted of 34 counts of fraud and being called by a judge at his civil trial a rapist in the common person sense

Biden had a horrible night Thursday. But the debate about the debate is misplaced. The only person who should withdraw from the race is Trump.

The joke that gets lost is Ford Prefect named himself after the make/model of a car because he perceived that cars are the dominant life form on Earth.
The central joke in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a race of dipshits building a planet-sized computer to answer the question of "life, the universe, and everything" and then a million years later it says the answer is 42, and somehow that has taken on a William Gibson level of prescience

there it is.

starting to wonder if congestion pricing was paused because the NYPD cops who commute from long island threatened a revolt and eric adams was like kathy, we can't have that

Were there any big articles on how the “Trump women” handled his trial?

Or was their total absence—and what it means—somehow just irrelevant?

All this is just so infuriating and exhausting.

As always, Trump is trying to have it both ways: appear socially liberal to the great swath of Americans while letting Christian right ideologies run the show, as his judicial nominees and political appointees.

Only this time, there’s a history of how he plays this game. It’s how we got Dobbs.
A point we make in this discussion: When Trump said he would introduce a plan to restrict access to contraception, that revealed he knows certain constituencies in his base are absolutely expecting him to deliver on this front. He will outsource this to those constituencies:
New pod: Trump says he won't touch contraception, but plans drawn up by his outside allies absolutely would dramatically restrict access to it. We dig into these plans from Project 2025 and others with reporter Alice Ollstein who's really interesting and informative:
