As always, I'm astonished far less by Trump himself than I am by the tens of millions of Americans, powerful and not, who are essentially pretending this is all normal. It's like the court martial judges saying "well, maybe they DID steal his strawberries" and making Queeg Secretary of The Navy.
Trump: "I gave them as you know unlimited water, Biden came back with a rigged election, and he immediately restricted the water again. But I came back in and immediately unrestricted it again. So now you have unlimited water to clean your damn dishes."
Remember, though: many of the top editors, and the owners, who enthusiastically hired these people and employed them for years as they hacked it up all over the place, producing vast piles of toxic garbage, are in New York. The whole enterprise is corrupt.
To be clear Lizza’s story is that Nuzzi sat on important matters of national significance for personal benefit and he’s sat on these details until he could personally benefit.

All of DC media needs to be thrown into the sea. Anyone who defends these people is a goddamn clown.

Also, editors LOVE[D?] her, despite all of us constantly telling them how awful she was, and how obvious it was anyway. The news media is now utterly corrupt, top to bottom.
The reason that we reporters are focused so intensely on the L'affair Nuzzi is that, as Olivia notes, it is a basically apocalyptic scandal in the most literal sense of that term: a dropping of masks. It's acting as confirmation of every hideous story anybody's ever told about political journalists
this was bad before, but these are the most troubling and serious allegations you can make about a journalist. if they’re true, i genuinely can’t think of a worse scandal in the history of political journalism. devastating to our industry, to public trust as a whole, and to everyone in its orbit

The year is 3025. The American empire has fallen. In its place a loose confederation of confections emerged. This is Donut world.

Writing about my wife’s naked political corruption like a Dan Brown novel
This is a lot, but (allegedly) Olivia Nuzzi sent a secret recorder with a sketch artist to tape Trump at Mar-a-Lago so she could feed campaign intel to RFK, where [pauses to take a breath] something Trump said about his assassination attempt “would shatter our understanding of recent history”??

If he does get it built, tearing the fucking thing down will amount to a national cleansing, should that happen.
Exclusive: President Trump has argued with the architect he handpicked to design a White House ballroom over the size of the project, reflecting a conflict between architectural norms and Trump’s grandiose aesthetic.
Trump wants a bigger White House ballroom. His architect disagrees.
The president and James McCrery had argued in recent weeks over the project’s size, with Trump pushing him to expand the ballroom.

Good lord. The presence of Dreyfuss really hurls this over the line. If it wer just the other two...meh.

I love the constant mentions (including in the title of the thing) that they are "centrist" and "moderate." Note: they are in fact right-wing loons. They're just not MAGA.
Is... this a parody site

I first noticed this guy from his great living thread on Twitter of reactionary-centrist wantwits telling everybody to stop worrying about stuff. But he is increasingly one of those guys, if not on that very specific thing. He's Yglesias.
Bluesky: “Obviously the housing crisis is the only reason anyone would choose to live outside of NYC”

Actual Americans: “Vegas, baby!”

The world is run by unsocialized cretins. One less now, I guess, but still.

Reminder that UK libel law sucks compared to the First Amendment & Times v. Sullivan, and this is why Trump in his first term said he wanted to "open up" U.S. libel law.
NEWS --> BBC confirms to me that they did edit a line out of historian @rutgerbregman.com's speech. It called Trump "the most openly corrupt president in US history."

BBC also confirms this was done on the advice of lawyers. So Trump's threats worked.

Trump’s Fury at BBC Gets Unnerving Results with Pro-MAGA Edit Stunner
First, British Broadcasting Corporation execs resigned after Trump complained about a segment. Now the BBC edited out a line from a historian that was critical of Trump. Where does this end?

It looks like this *might* be the administration deporting Leavitt’s brother’s ex for personal reasons.
"A woman with a family connection to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has been arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Revere, Massachusetts."

Today’s 21-year-olds were 12 when Trump was first elected. This is the only world they’ve ever known: one were Trump is normal and Joe Biden is corrupt and unfit for office.
Kids these days just have to believe us that it never used to be acceptable for the president to threaten his political opponents with execution every day while stealing billions of dollars.

Nearly 20 years ago, I had lunch with an NYT editor (in the business section) whom I'd worked with. He talked about three things: the people at the paper whom he had decided were "affirmative action hires"; how he'd sneaked peeks at the hot chicks in high school; and how much he liked Josh Barro.

So much of the reaction to this has been faux-cynical posturing, as if this were just a silly celebrity-sex-romp scandal. These people are all in the upper reaches of politics and media, and this story goes to the heart of media corruption and incompetence in particular.
I actually think it’s okay to take a ridiculous scandal seriously when it involves a wingnut conspiracy theorist in charge of things like vaccine policy and pandemic preparedness
