im getting really sick of the primary voices i hear about "ai" being a problem coming from people who think learning enough about how it works to identify its use is some kind of sin and whose justifications for hating it range from vibes-based to mystical

I say this with zero irony: if you are even tangentially a part of a retro video game community, it is your civic duty to push back against this company and shun anyone who doesn't. This is fascism tapping gently at the door and as soon as you let it in, it's going to invite its friends.

So one from Elpias seems to actually have what happened with the whole Exp33 AI situation. They experimented when the tech first came out in 2022. But abounded it with fully new textures that were supposed to be replaced but they forgot to swap the correct files out.

if sandfall briefly experimented with genAI 3 years ago when people poorly understood its harmfulness then that does not sound to me like genAI was at all important for expedition 33's development, and as such does not change how i feel about the game. that being said, IGA did the right thing.

With Critical Reflex being such a major player in the indie space, these accusations of covered up sexual harassment and unfair labour practices are all deeply disappointing and distressing. I hope this all gets tackled quickly and decisively.

Tbh I think people should start thinking about this stuff in terms of “organizing for impact & effectiveness.” I don’t think the Hogwarts Legacy backlash was effective — the game sold extremely well, unleashed a RW hold on VTubing — but that probably could have been avoided with better planning
Harder to convince people to stop using Fortnite over this because of what Fortnite is. It’s no longer just a funny battle royale clone of PUBG, it’s more akin to a platform like VRChat or Bluesky. Kinda in the same way I wouldn’t tell people to stop using Discord if they did a Hogwarts Legacy promo

I'm so serious I'm blocking anyone I see still stream and talk positively about it.

Anyway this is the thing I was trying to respond to:

The context of the timeline of Sandfall's brief use of AI is important. In 2022, there wasn't as widespread knowledge of how GenAI worked. Its clear that as that knowledge became known, Sandfall committed to not use GenAI.

Ah! There's a clarification in the article from this summer, also it's a Spanish languaged paper, not french.

Summarized: The assets were created before it was widely known how bad generative AI is aka 2022. If you look at the assets you can see that they look like earlier generations.

Zero said it did. Most said it made things harder.

Well, look on the bright side; crunch may make everyone miserable and decimate your talent pool, but it also makes a team less productive overall

It's important that we assess the damage of gamergate, but as it was largely about harassing games journalists, I'm disappointed that this piece didn't actually talk to many games journalists. Many of us quit journalism since then, for good reason. I'm sad to not see that addressed.
GamesIndustry.biz spoke to some of the industry's most influential women about how they've seen attitudes change over the past decade and – crucially – what steps are still needed to encourage and retain female talent.

I've seen some takes suggesting that this was all a marketing stunt and this would not have sold nearly this well if it was on Steam sans controversy. Look, discoverability is fucked, true, but the idea that a dev would forego Steam and Epic on a lark is a ridiculous take.
the good news is that the media attention and support from an audience has helped Horses do well enough that Santa Ragione has been able to pay all its owed royalties and loans. so it's not in debt.

the bad news is it's still not enough to keep the studio together.

When we say early, are we talking Unreal 4 build or after they'd gotten a publisher? I do think the time frame matters as I think opinions around GenAI really altered like 3 years ago. That's about when I learned better.
