Last week, ICE arrested and separated a father and son after a routine check-in. Six-year-old Yuanxin had just enrolled in the first grade at an elementary school in Astoria. Now he's in custody, alone. ICE won't say where. This cruelty serves no one. It must end.

This is actually a pretty good analogy to what Germany did in the 30's that allowed the US to build a nuclear weapon.
is it a good idea to

1) decide that a technology is militarily important,
2) deport as many people as you can who do it to your biggest rival for that technology,
and
3) also deport a bunch of other scientists who have nothing to do with it, but who now have a reason to be upset with you
Apparently every Chinese academic in any field of “interest” to the PLA is getting their visa rejected for, more or less, presumptively being a spy. My friend’s visa is denied because she studies “neuroscience.” What she actually studies is jaw pain - but ICE is flatly rejecting all appeals.

We came to LA as refugees from the USSR in 1991. Life wasn’t easy, but we persevered and, I dare say, came to contribute something of worth to this nation.

Had I experienced the following when I was a boy, I don’t know what would have become of me.

My eventual physics PhD was not likely to pay enough to feed the child we were expecting, but I had learned how to program computers while writing Fortran code to help analyze data from the electron scattering experiments at the nuclear physics lab in which I worked.

This is crass but it also might also serve as an obscure passcode for meetings of the secret Holly Hunter devoted-for-life fan club.

@govpritzker.illinois.gov I want you to watch this video of me slammed to the ground- why are you allowing this to happen to people you know are on the right side of history. They tied my hands behind my back and when I asked them to be loosened because I was going numb they said, “STFU.”
at one point, i watched a cook county sheriff’s officer (who appears to be in charge) point out a priest in the crowd.

he and a couple officers then went into the crowd , dragged him into the street, and arrested him.

situation is still tense as crowd jostles with police to get into the street.

I think this is important and it’s not specific to newsrooms. Why are they closing this section of the highway when they don’t seem to be working on it? Why does my software not have this feature? Why did the senate do that thing?

It’s always way more complicated than you can imagine.
And the size of the organization makes it harder, not easier, to control every aspect from the top to the bottom. None of this is an excuse for any fuck ups, but the place just simply doesn't work the way many people think it does--especially if they've never been in a newsroom.

The attorney general and the FBI director, a manosphere podcaster bro, pulled into the situation room a member of Congress best known for getting kicked out of a Beetlejuice musical for drunkenly giving her date a handy, in order to pressure her about the president's child sex trafficking scandal.

A family friend was telling us about what her husband shared about his experience in Broadview before he was deported back to Mexico. She's been sharing to friends and family because she's just in disbelief & horror what her husband told her. She wasn't able to talk to him until he was in Mexico.

My movie life is often just me hoping something will be as good as a The Lives of Others and it never is.
The Distant Lover by Christoph Hein is some classic East German alienation, good but it made me just want to read Stasiland or watch The Lives of Others again instead.
Quo Vadis by Henryk Sienkiewicz is dated and clumsy, but you have to admit that a story about Christians in Nero's Rome hits hard right now.

Here's another bit of conventional wisdom Zohran completely blew away: His speech was at well above a 10th-grade level. It was complex, erudite, punctuated by deep and fluent references. You don't have to condescend to voters with baby talk! Part of re-establishing norms is speaking like an adult.
