Hell is not hot enough for the people who put this American in harms way
Sarah Beckstrom's ex-boyfriend told NBC News she dreamed of becoming an FBI special agent.

She didn't want to deploy to D.C.

"She hated it. She cried about it."

But she started visiting monuments and museums and started enjoying it.

May she rest in peace.

National Guard member killed in D.C. shooting remembered for 'heart of gold'
The slain soldier’s former boyfriend recalled her empathy and generosity. “She doesn’t even have to know you and she’ll do anything for you,” he said.

I'm thankful for...
getting through this year, for my cute little bachelor pad & hard-won financial security
for all my union siblings who worked so hard for our first contract
that my children & other loved ones are healthy and relatively happy
that I have fulfilling, purposeful work that I enjoy
One thing I have no patience for is "there is nothing to be thankful for" doomerism. If Americans were finding things to be thankful for in 1863, two and a half years into a bloody Civil War, when Abraham Lincoln formalized the Thanksgiving holiday, then I can find things to be thankful for too.

Whatever her plethora of other professional shortcomings, Nuzzi simply is a shit writer. Like, failed out of freshman composition, beleaguered TA rubbing eyes in disbelief shitty. And that’s the most unforgivable sin of all in a journalist.

It is pretty clear that the people of the US are on an organizational and resistance learning curve that is moving waay faster than the thugs in the administration can keep up.
My hometown absolutely floored me this past week. FLOORED.

For safety reasons, I haven’t said much about it. But I’m so damn proud of my family and friends. So proud.
We'll see if they actually mean it, but this announcement after one week confirms that Charlotte was impeccably well organized for this moment.

Solidarity ends when the invoice arrives.
Welp, it looks like the Portland Metro Chamber’s solidarity with the community against ICE and a federal invasion ends at charging an impact fee to property owners who would rent their properties to detention facilities that harm neighbors & drain public resources.

Can’t say that we’re surprised!

Work in public sector? A lot of hybrid meetings that you need notes for? Tempted to use AI transcription tools to do that?

So, in OR a work meeting IP/virtual is not subject to public hearing or records laws. Manually created (and importantly EDITED) meeting minutes or notes are public records 1/

Bellingcat (investigative journalism) editor with a thread on how AI can "clean up" and reinforce disordered thinking. Adding just one more item to the overflowing bucket of cognitive threats posed by this stuff.
We’re watching a shift where AI simulates the cohesion and reinforcement that used to require an entire online community. A single person can now build a complete parallel reality with nothing more than a prompt window. Which seems bad.

What amazing timing for this news story, leading into tonight's vote on banning algorithmic price fixing tools for Portland rentals.
BREAKING NEWS: We’ve secured a $7 million settlement holding the largest U.S. landlord accountable for a price fixing scheme – and putting a check on the rising cost of rentals.

I heard about MRM’s terrible contract and I have heard that individuals have negotiated a more reasonable contract. But MRM didn’t change their boilerplate.

SFF writers can’t unionize, but I won’t send stories to them until their contract is fair for every writer. Solidarity is solidarity.
Did you read my post from last week about how contract woes caused me to withdraw an accepted story from F&SF, ending my 54-year quest to be published in that magazine? But wait (as the saying goes) — there's more! Scroll down at the link for an update. www.scottedelman.com/wordpress/20...

Farm kids go to "work" as soon as mom and dad think they're up to it (12-13 for me) & it promotes work ethic and drudgery tolerance. I guess my first actual job I had to get a W2 was probably summer de-tasseling when I was 16. First "job" was at a sandwich shop prep/counter help in college, 19.
How old were you when you got your first job?

The data shows that the age at which people are entering the labour market is going up, and up.
