This afternoon's treadmill TV — Pluribus Episode 5 — followed, since I had more stepping time, by another Season 3 episode of Barry. I'd love to jump into Stranger Things with the rest of you, but that must wait until I've finished up Barry.

This has been the least active deer-hunting season since we moved to the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia in 2004. During our first years, there was constant gunfire all day throughout, but now here we are on day six, and I only just heard my first shot. I wonder ... fewer deer or fewer hunters?

Completed my program participant survey for August's @laworldcon.bsky.social, where I hope I'll get to hang out with some of you. And so you'll be able to recognize me when we're there, here I am at my first Worldcon, which I attended in 1974 at the tender age of 19. Haven't changed a bit!

While completing my homework of reading pages 58-123 of James's Joyce's Ulysses to be ready for Monday's Zoom reading group — the third of nine sessions — I encountered Stephen Dedalus cutting someone off my saying: "Life is too short." Which is sort of how I'm starting to feel about Ulysses itself.

A mysterious box showed up from PS Publishing, the perspicacious people who this month released my new science fiction short story collection 101 Things to Do Before You're Downloaded. What's was inside? Because unboxing videos are mandatory these days, let's find out together! youtu.be/N4eWakaRYvs

I will be forever grateful Michael Whelan allowed us to repurpose that evocative image on the cover to the first issue of Science Fiction Age magazine, which I'm finding difficult to accept launched a third of a century ago. I wish I was editing it still!

Informed Delivery alerted me a UK package will, after many stops along the way, find its way into my hands today. I suspect these will be signature sheets for the limited hardcover edition of my collection 101 Things to Do Before You're Downloaded. Fingers crossed! pspublishing.co.uk/101-things-t...

Ah, the deflation of finding an anthology for which a certain story of mine seems to be thematically perfect, then scrolling further down the guidelines and learning the maximum word count sought is a mere 3,000. Alas, that's flash as far as my muse is concerned. My sweet spot is 5,000-8,000 words.

Picked up tickets to see Hannah Cowley's 1783 comedy "A Bold Stroke for a Husband" next year at the American Shakespeare Center in Staunton, Virginia. It will be our first exposure to that writer, her play, or the company. Intrigued by all three. americanshakespearecenter.com/events/a-bol...

Decluttering, I came across one of my Analog contracts offered by the previous ownership — one I signed without needing to ask for a single change — and considering my recent F&SF fiasco, I thought it worth sharing what the indemnification clause looked like. Note the absence of the word "alleged."

Received my 46th short story rejection of 2025 just now. Will I top 2024's total of 54 rejects before the year is out? (Maybe.) Will I break my all-time record of 82 in a single year? (Highly unlikely.) However many more may come over the next five weeks, remember: Never give up! Never surrender!

A Georgia judge just dismissed the charges against Donald Trump for his outrageous attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election, but as we all know — and as the commemorative coin I own minted by Valery Jung Estabrook reminds us all — the man is guilty, guilty, guilty!

Happy 72nd birthday to comics artist Pat Broderick, who collaborated with me to unmask Captain Marvel back in 1978 for the final issue of my run on that title. I wish we'd had more chances to work together, but alas, that was the only one. Hoping your day is fantastic!
