I live in the heart of California gold country. One of the richest mines ever in CA is nearby. Opened circa 1860 closed 1942. A local foundation has preserved the records on site. I know not a stitch has been digitized and am confident no more than 2 pro historians have ever been in there.

When we say "no, everything hasn't been digitized," I need you to understand that we really mean is that virtually nothing has been digitized. This is because the realm of primary sources that historians use is incomprehensibly large.

No, you do not need "AI skills." "AI skills" refers to prompt engineering - being able to 'prompt the model correctly' to get anything approaching what you need. It is quite literally gaslighting you into doing the "intelligence" work for a so-called "AI."

Well, you’re gonna need them, and you’re gonna get left behind if you don’t have them. If anybody ever says this to you, please ask them to be specific, because at this point I’m not even confident I can make up a task that AI can do for me. In fact, here’s a simple one: please name me somebody who has gotten significantly better at their job using AI. One person you know. One. Just one. Try it. Anyway. I am, in theory, exactly the person who should be getting the most out of AI. I write a lot. I research a lot. I constantly have to keep an eye on stuff. I pull stuff out of large piles of data. I think I make like 500 searches a week, I’m a complete animal. I talk back and forth with my editor Matt Hughes constantly to brainstorm ideas. So why don’t I use AI? Surely it would be perfect, right? Nope! AI is a terrible researcher. I’ve used everything from AI mode on Google to the most expensive generative search engines available for large hedge funds, and in 99.9% of cases I’ve found nothing new or interesting or novel. That edge case was one time when a search engine pulled up a single quote from an earnings statement. Once. One time. So, what do people mean by “AI skills”? Prompt engineering. They mean “how can you get this product that’s sold and hyped as a panacea for every informational problem to do the thing that it’s meant to do,” and the answer is usually “it can’t do it, but the way to get it close is to find nuanced ways to ask it to do stuff.” In a very real sense, “AI skills training” is actually AI training you — making you fill in the gaps, making you do the work that this alleged “intelligence” does.

Excerpt from the book Why We Fear AI by Hagen Blix and Ingeborg Glimmer: “…it shows, though, is how much the thought of something more intelligent has struck real terror into professional hearts. But the terror is not actually about some natural language processing tech-nology, and it is not about machine learning. It is about having mistakenly believed the justification of ‘intelligence’ - and what the fears show is that everyone knows that capitalism marks out some people as legitimately disposable. Most people know that the meritocracy is at least a partial lie whenever we look up the social hierarchy. In the same way, when we look down far enough, we all know that capitalism violently spits people out, cuts them out of society, and marks them as no longer deserving of the status of real (i.e., profitably employable) human beings. We all know this fact because we see it on our streets, where we avert our eyes from people deprived of food, housing, healthcare, and dignity. The fear of artificial intelligence is the fear of that thinly veiled undercurrent of our justifications of social hierarchy, the ever-present if usually unspoken) possibility of marking some people as superfluous to society, because they are superfluous to capitalism. It is the tacit recognition that we live threatened lives, coupled with the desire to forget about that fact again. It is the repressed class consciousness of those who live from a wage, but despise the working class. It's the terrible certainty that, had things gone just a little bit differently, if one had gone to a different school or had a different parent, if some mentor hadn't noticed, or if a family member had fallen ill-any of us could have been where our unhoused neighbor is. For the sake of functioning, those of the middle class must forget these facts: they can shut their eyes, but they shouldn't be surprised when they see the truth still behind closed lids, haunting their dreams and nightmares.”

I mean, the fact that all those institutions are absolute moral fiascos may have something to do with it. But still it's striking: I am less likely at 45 to talk to a cop, subscribe to a national newspaper, believe my employer when they say they are guided by certain values than I was at 35.
