Is this cheese grater conscious? Many users feel they're talking to a real person. Scientists say it's time to consider whether they're onto something.

In UX, one of the lessons you have to learn is to balance what people say they want with what they actually want.

Looking at this, people want to ask questions without judgement. They want to access knowledge. They want free time.

The problem is AI only offers illusions of this.
This is so soulless, I can't stand it. We have BRAINS. We can USE THEM.

I sometimes say "I don't know how to make friends as an adult" and honestly that's not true. I do know how, I just don't want to.

Waymo privatized another public street:

Chanel approaching 4th, San Francisco

Possibly queued for a Billie Eilish show at Chase Center ~half mile away.

The light rail train on 4th seen passing in front of this roboherd has more passenger capacity than all of them combined.

The issue isn’t cost. It’s that the entire infrastructure in this country has been put into cars. Parking lots everywhere and bus stations nowhere. Light rail that comes every half an hour and isn’t synchronized so it takes forever if you have to switch lines.

This is also why the platform companies, despite very obviously being publishers, are so desperate to avoid being labeled as publishers. It's all about evading accountability for things any normal company would be burned to the ground for.

You can make art.

The biggest step isn't getting good at art, it's being willing to make art that doesn't match the idea of "good art" in your head.

Making a lot of imperfect art is an essential step toward making perfect art; a counterproductive goal you shouldn't have anyway.

Just make art.

Doctors say it's possible to get hooked on pot. There's a widespread misconception that marijuana is not addictive, and it's expanded as a growing number of states legalize pot.

i’m fairly sure it’s by design (that they don’t know)
American culture doesn't know the rest of us exist. Mainstream media do not know there's more than a century of history of activism and theory in which our movements are grounded, and that our communities have a operated in solidarity with other Black and brown communities since the 19th century.

Mamdani just played Trump without sacrificing immigrants, Muslims, workers, or the LGBTQ.

Trump did his transactional charm offensive, Mamdani countered without compromising.

He won big and this is the man the Democratic Establishment still won't embrace.

This is the story that explains the last 25 years of our history. There are lots of other things, but this is foundational.
We spent a year investigating billionaires for @washingtonpost.com.

We found: the wealthiest 100 Americans gave $1.1 billion to influence the 2024 elections — 140x more than they did in 2000. And almost all of that giving boosted Republicans.

Eighty-six Democrats joined Republicans in supporting the measure, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
