Cooking at home for yourself is also so much easier when you figure out that a recipe isn't automatically garbage when it uses frozen or canned foods, and there are a lot of things where it makes sense to use canned or frozen veggies instead of fresh.

PROJECT! Did I desecrate history, or upcycle? Whatever, I have finished! I removed, reinforced, and edged the yoke and cuffs and petit point from a poorly stored, shattered silk, 1920s day dress, and put them on a new, sturdy cotton dress of similar cut and neckline. More detail in ALT Text
Detail of yoke and one cuff of an antique dress sewn onto a new dress. I got the original dress at the final closing of the wonderful shop "All Things Vintage" in Oakland, I think, two years ago? (Sniffle. I still miss the shop.) It had been hanging high on a wall of antique display clothes, many of which had been there before the owner acquired the business, and she let me have it for a song. But the song was far from over. The black silk body of the antique dress was falling apart, literally shattering in jagged pieces, like glass when handled. Years of dry air and UV light damage really took their toll. The dress sheath could not be properly restored. The yoke and cuffs were still in pretty good shape though, as they were appliquéd onto the dress, so they were a little stronger than the sheath itself. I cut them off the dress, reinforced them from behind with iron on quilting fabric fuse and a thin layer of new silk, quilted them to the reinforcing fabric by hand, edged them with bias tape, oh so carefully by hand, and sewed them to a new dress of similar cut with the same neckline. I love that the petit point rose medallions all survived my attentions. Their backing was a little crunchy, and they had to be treated with extra care and fuse reinforcing to keep their stitches from coming loose. Trying the dress on before I added the second cuff Almost there! A shot of the dress as I was finishing up sewing the last petit point medallion over some crocheted antique lace onto a front pocket (It has pockets!!) Finished! I wore it out for a full day today, confident about the yoke which is very well enforced indeed now, backed and bias tape edged and THEN appliquéd, but I was a little worried about the cuffs, as they had pressure from my arms and were only edged onto the sleeves, not fully flat quilted onto them, like the yoke, but they held up perfectly! I do need to be a bit mindful and careful when I wear it, but the new cotton dress I sewed the antique pieces onto should hold up a long time!

Elmer’s around the edge of a snip of paper, hands it to me, I stick it down. We do another.

We're looking at a 6-bill shutdown that likely lasts until Monday unless the House descends into chaos.

Upon enactment, all of the govt EXCEPT DHS will have full-year funding. DHS funding expires February 14 (tho ICE & CBP continue in a DHS shutdown). At that point, we will be fighting JUST on DHS.

But the Irishman's very first submarines were built for the Irish republican movement. The Royal Navy have no idea that a Holland vessel has heen operating in the Irish Sea. Michael had hoped to shield Akiko and Liam from the ongoing violence. Now, however, the family find themselves drawn into a crisis that threatens not just their lives but the future of their country. There’s an Arts Council of Ireland logo across from the barcode, to acknowledge funding for the writing of the book.
