Seriously one of the sources I used was a set of journals that a guy in town had found in his attic when he bought his house. I sat at his dining room table one day and read them.
When we say "no, everything hasn't been digitized," I need you to understand that we really mean is that virtually nothing has been digitized. This is because the realm of primary sources that historians use is incomprehensibly large.
Seems like it's worth posting this one again.

The work that scholars and researchers actually do is the work that people *think* AI is doing. You read all sorts of things. You make connections. You notice where the holes are — what *hasn’t* been observed, questioned, investigated. You synthesize it into something that has never existed before.

It's the winter solstice, and time for your annual reminder that you can sing the poem from "The Dark is Rising" to the tune of "Turkey in the Straw."

And now, please continue with your day.

Classical billiards can compute.

With Isaac Ramos, we show that 2D billiard systems are Turing complete, implying the existence of undecidable trajectories in physically natural models from hard-sphere gases to celestial mechanics.
Determinism ≠ predictability. 🎱🧠 @upc.edu @ricardsole.bsky.social

So reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) can't fly, but they are VERY MAGICAL.

For example, their EYES CHANGE COLOR during the year & they're one of the few large mammals that can see UV. Golden brown in summer, deep blue in winter.

Let's talk about the unique visual adaptations of Rudolph and company.

The Trump DOJ deleted a literal drawer full of Trump photos from the Epstein files.
The Trump loyal DOJ have removed at least 16 files, including images of Donald Trump, from the Epstein Files web page after initially releasing them.

There has been no explanation from the government and no notice to the public in regards to why the files were removed. #OpDeathEaters

This image (File 468 in the Epstein records), showing Donald Trump, was part of the DOJ’s Friday release and has since vanished from the agency’s website. Funny how that works. Someone must have missed that redaction, oops.

Superb video included in today's JPL update for #PerseveranceRover (www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/nasas-p...). With synthetic frames and obviously, the rover doesn't move that fast, but the final result is impressive.

This thread on insults from around the world 🧵
The most brutal way of telling someone they’re a few sandwiches short of a picnic that I’ve heard in French is t’es pas la truite la plus oxygénée de la rivière. It means “you’re not the most oxygenated trout in the river.”

Incidentally, I am by no means a doomer, but it does feel a little doomy to me that Mitt Romney and Bill Kristol are taking political positions well to the left of the highest-ranking congressional Democrats.
Going back in time to 2009 and telling myself Bill Kristol is the Republican president’s harshest critic and Mitt Romney is begging the government to raise his taxes and watching as 2009 me goes into a coma.
