"The secret fear of the morally depraved is that virtue is actually common, and that they’re the ones who are alone."
Last week in Minnesota, I watched ordinary people risk their lives to protect their neighbors. In the process, they not only won a significant—though not final—victory against authoritarianism, they proved virtually every MAGA social theory wrong. (gift link) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...

if only there had been a movement and momentum several years ago to downsize police budgets, clear out the white supremacists and de-militarize local law enforcement
The elephant in the room is that mayors and governors across the country have very good reason to question the loyalty and allegiances of the state and local police forces and that’s one of the impediments to doing anything about the current occupations

The American dream is greeting a stray cat outside of a diner with your good pal on a cold winter night, and then heading inside to warm up with a cup of coffee while you eat pie and catch up.

Interesting thread
Bellingcat’s contact email has always been a magnet for people with fairly unusual views; paranoid delusions, sprawling conspiracies, the works. But recently, the pattern has shifted, we’re seeing more and more emails clearly written with ChatGPT.

Old Soviet joke:

Why do ICE agents travel in groups of three?

One can read, one can write, and the third keeps an eye on the two intellectuals
New ICE recruiting methods have resulted in half of this group of absolute winners failing AN OPEN BOOK TEST

I'd take the other side of all this seriously if anyone ever bothered to offer any solutions to our political divisions beyond "let's talk better." We live in the world we live in. No one has an actual way out of it because there isn't one. So let's take the world as it is, fight, and win.

sorry everybody, this was my bad. last night I rewatched all the president's men with a Coors and some barbeque, then went to Redford's wiki and said out loud "wow, 89, good for him"

The KKK of the 1920s is probably the most American organization to have ever existed; a for-profit fraternal organization, a multi-level marketing scheme founded by a defrocked minister to piggyback off of a popular movie, eventually torn apart by internecine infighting and a national sex scandal.
TIL - one reason for the KKK’s explosive growth in the early 1920s was that it was a multi-level marketing organization

The good part of AI is that the only thing a writer can do to combat it is to become more human. Make your writing weirder, hornier, more violent, absurd, poetic, difficult, political, jagged, dreamlike, ironic, surreal, alive. You don't have any choice but to plumb the depths.

It’s really wild how there is no reason to deport anyone, let alone children and US citizens and LPRs and students and people undergoing cancer treatment etc. it’s all a fake solution to a made up problem enacted by violent racists who are stealing from you

As a good friend said today: they are at war with the entire post-WW2 world order because they are literally Nazis. Simple as!
people are expecting congress to swoop in and save the day, republicans defect, to vote down and retract the trump tariffs and i’m sorry but that’s just not happening. they are all in line and supportive of this

People don't miss manufacturing jobs. They miss the effects of having 30+ percent union density. And we can build worker power again, with good policies, for the jobs most working class people actually have today rather than hoping mumbo jumbo will make it 1955 again.
When (some) people talk about bringing back manufacturing, they mean "bring back steel & auto jobs that someone can take right out of high school, and live a middle class life"
The worst part of this is that even if manufacturing jobs came back because of this (they won’t)
and even if Americans retooled for those jobs (they won’t) those jobs sucked! It’s like demanding to return to being a farming society. People fled that life the instant they could, in the millions!

This argument would not be any different if the victim were a US citizen: sorry we "accidentally" disappeared a citizen, but he's a foreign policy matter now.

That is exactly the goal. They think they found an infinite gulag glitch that works on anyone, even citizens.
Despite admitting to having illegally sent a guy to El Salvador by mistake, and even though the U.S. is paying El Salvador to indefinitely imprison him, the DOJ is arguing that, well, nothing to do, it's not in our hands anymore. The general tone of their response is "welp, sucks to be him."
