Unpopular shutdown take: something like this result was probably baked in from the start, trying to fight was the right thing to do anyway, and Dems don't suck. Shutdown politics always favor Rs due to nihilists' advantage. They've never given half a shit if people starve before, they didn't now.

Less than 3% of Congressional Democrats caved. 100% of Republicans created a situation in which we had to choose between making families go hungry or lose their health care. Please blame the right people.

Yet again another federal court affirms that Donald Trump must get SNAP benefits out.
It is beyond sick and cruel for this President to quite literally sue in order to keep children and seniors hungry.

Trump pardons Rudy Giuliani and others involved in bid to overturn 2020 election
The pardons may be largely symbolic as none of the people listed were convicted of federal crimes, which the presidential pardon covers.

Need to stop pretending:
We know this because he told us.
The reality is the government was shut down the first day Trump entered office. We just didn't talk about it that way.
The only real leverage Dems had is on appropriations. Schumer screwed that up in February/March for FY 26. It imperiled his political support.

i'm basically with you on this. the optics are bad, the power dynamic is bad, but it's bad either way. the problems go much deeper than "caving" - primarying people is fun but not a structural solution to having elected a party that doesn't want to live in a society or a republic

The thing to make it about was the lawless authoritarianism. Just like last week’s elections were.
They were never going to get ACA subsidies, which is part of why it was a mistake to insist this was only about ACA subsidies and nothing else.
Sincere question: does anybody have any evidence that the GOP/WH would have eventually folded and extended the ACA subsidies if the shutdown continued?
I haven’t seen any. The President didn’t seem to feeling any pressure. No GOP Senator AFAIK expressed any concern. (Some Reps did)

U.S Democrats need total solidarity to beat a fascist party that has total solidarity. This now sets the scene of U.S Democrats creating a perception they are responsible for the shutdown which GOP will exploit to amplify blame against them. Dems repeat foolishness that GOP can work in good faith
On no...
Eight Moderate Senate Democrats caved and voted YES on CR to end shutdown...
I'm sure Trump is doing a victory dance at Mar-A-Lago...

I'll have more on this from an actual ACA wonk POV (which is my wheelhouse anyway) tomorrow.

Long-term, there’s plenty of time for recriminations around the Democratic capitulation (primaries, leadership votes, etc.).
Short-term, we can’t lose sight of our biggest goal:
Pressuring House and Senate Republicans to extend the ACA subsidies.
Like it or not, that’s where the fight is now.

Or in a different way? If so, why not fight that way now?

Democrats have been fighting for months to address America's healthcare crisis
For the millions who will lose coverage
For people with cancer who won't get the care they need
For working families who can't afford to pay $25K more a year for healthcare

This is most directly about the fake electors (none of whom face any federal charges anyway) but the actual wording of it is much broader: it's effectively a full and complete blanket pardon for anybody who had anything to do with trying to steal the 2020 election, not just the Jan 6-ers.
The language of this pardon is extremely broad.
It includes “all United States citizens for conduct relating to the advice, creation, organization, execution, submission, support, voting, activities, participation in, or advocacy for or of any slate or proposed slate of Presidential
electors…”

This is it. Sorry, but it is.
Nobody will answer it.
Because when psychopaths hold the cards you lose either way.
Damned if you do.
Damned if you don't.
This was all decided a year ago.
But nobody likes to think about that.
Especially those who helped create the result of the 2024 election.
