Last summer, the EU (the Commission) was held back from retaliating by weak member states. The Commission is likely going to be unleashed now. And they have been doing a lot of thinking about how to retaliate. The question is how far are they willing to go. 3/

Oil companies aren’t going to sink tens of billions of dollars in capital expenditures that will take decades to pay off in order to revive Venezuela’s oil sector when they don’t know what the security situation will look like in 6 days, 6 months, or 6 years from now. They are not charities.

Some of this is marketing hype from people who are selling AI tools (Boris works on Claude Code) but it rings true

This is a great analysis of why conservatives feel persecuted for others simply existing or being acknowledged.

It’s fear their identity and choices will stop being mainstream or normal. That’s why they get upset at Happy Holidays (acknowledging other celebrations exist) versus Merry Christmas.

As it happened, the Liberal Democrats had a vote down on Tuesday afternoon calling for a customs union with the EU. It was a bit of procedure, binding no one to anything, so it didn’t matter, but it was notable that the Tory benches were empty, just 21 of them there. No Mark Francois, no Iain Duncan Smith. Who would speak for Brexit?
